Nate Montana will transfer from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to play for the University of Montana. The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Montana, the younger QB has already enrolled at his new school and plans to compete as a walk-on.

Montana rarely saw the field in South Bend, throwing only 18 passes through his junior year. With two quarterbacks likely to remain ahead of him on the depth chart going into 2011, Montana would clearly like a chance to start a season before his college career is done.

This is Montana's third career transfer. After walking on to Notre Dame's team as a freshman, he transferred to Pasadena Community College, then back to Notre Dame. He hasn't wowed at any stop along the way, but has as good a pedigree as any player in the nation and a bigger frame than his father had.
