Despite Bo Ryan's restrictions, Jarrod Uthoff says he's transferring from Wisconsin to Iowa.

Despite the restrictions put in place by his former head coach, Jarrod Uthoff says he's transferring from Wisconsin to fellow Big Ten member Iowa.

Uthoff he'll have to pay his own way next year at Iowa and will also have to sit out the 2012-13 season per NCAA transfer rules.

"I just didn't want money to be a factor in where I wanted to play," Uthoff said.

Uthoff, a former Iowa Mr. Basketball, announced his intent to transfer shorts after the end of last season. The story made national headlines when news spread that Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan had banned Uthoff from transferring to a large number of schools, including all members of the Big Ten and ACC.

Wisconsin officials, including Ryan, later met with Uthoff and both sides agreed that his restricted transfer list would be limited to all Big Ten schools.

Uthoff also told The Associated Press that he hasn't spoken to Ryan since he told him of his plans to transfer, even though Ryan had told Uthoff he'd call him once he returned from vacation. The 6-foot-8 forward redshirted in 2011-12.

Hours after vehemently defending his position on national radio, Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan has agreed to significantly reduce the number of schools freshman Jarrod Uthoff is restricted from transferring to.

After meeting with Uthoff Thursday afternoon, University of Wisconsin officials announced in a statement that the former Iowa Mr. Basketball is now free to transfer to any school outside the Big Ten. He had previously been banned by Ryan from transferring to 25 schools, a list which included the entire Atlantic Coast Conference.

Here’s a portion of the statement from UW-Madison:

Uthoff visited with both Associate Athletic Director Justin Doherty and Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez Thursday morning as part of the appeal process.

Doherty, Alvarez and head coach Bo Ryan then met and collectively came to a decision that the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department has lifted "permission to contact" restrictions on ANY school outside of the Big Ten Conference.

Ryan is supportive of denials of Big Ten institutions only and has wanted the appeals process to serve as a means for dialogue to occur between Uthoff and UW Athletics administration.

Uthoff has been notified of these decisions.

Earlier in the day, Ryan stood firmly behind his original stance during an appearance on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike” radio show.

“I am doing what every other coach in the country has done,” Ryan said on the program.

Uthoff, a former Rivals.com Top 150 recruit, redshirted the 2011-12 season. He has stated that the reason behind his transfer is a feeling that he doesn’t fit in well with Ryan’s system.

Wisconsin Badgers head coach Bo Ryan has blocked the transfer of basketball player Jarrod Uthoff from transferring basically anywhere other than the planet Mars. Ryan recently has been held to the fire for his restrictions and went on ESPN's "Mike & Mike" In The Morning to discuss the problem.

Ryan was taken to task by "Mike & Mike" on the show and didn't back down from his position whatsoever, noting that it's commonplace for 300 other schools. Ryan has blocked Uthoff from transferring to the entire Big Ten, Marquette, the entire ACC, and Iowa State. Mike Golic even goes so far as to call it a "vindictive" move by Ryan, comparing it to when a coach ups and leaves for another job at another school without restriction.

Coaches restricting players from transferring to a handful of schools isn't unheard of in college basketball, but Bo Ryan's transfer ban list for freshman Jarrod Uthoff is abnormally lengthy.

We are just over two weeks removed from Kentucky cutting down the nets in New Orleans, and already the extremely large number of high-profile transfers has become the top theme of college basketball's offseason.

While the proverbial dust is still a ways away from settling, it appears that when all is said and done each Division-I team will be losing an average of somewhere around 1.5 players to transfer.

With that being the case, the decision by Wisconsin's Jarrod Uthoff to take his game to another campus isn't worthy of national headlines on its own. The story is where his soon-to-be former head coach Bo Ryan says he can't go...which is a lot of places.

Uthoff, the state of Iowa's Mr. Basketball for 2011, informed the Badger coaching staff last week of his intent to transfer. Shortly thereafter he was told that his new destination could not be a Big Ten school...then it was Iowa State and Marquette...and then it was the entire ACC.

All in all, Ryan has banned Uthoff from transferring to a total of 25 schools.

"You have a better guess than I do," Uthoff said when asked about the reason behind Ryan's large restricted list. "I'm not really sure."

What Ryan is doing is completely within NCAA rules, but there's a reason you hardly ever see coaches come up with a restricted transfer list that's more than a handful of schools long. That reason is that it's ridiculously petty and incredibly unfair to the player affected.

Who knew the Big Ten/ACC Challenge (or the vaunted Wisconsin/Iowa State rivalry) meant so much to Bo Ryan?
