After being drafted by Carolina in 2008, Murphy signed a three-year contract with the Hurricanes in 2009. He played in 96 games in the AHL including 76 with the Charlotte Checkers over the last two seasons.

Allen picked up just 14 points in a full 82-game slate last season. At 6'5, 226 pounds, he never had to pretend that offense was his forte anyway. As Canes Country points out, Allen was a solid shutdown defenseman who logged a lot of minutes on penalty kills and led the team with 188 blocked shots last season.

Carolina shored up its defense Monday, signing Jamie McBain to a new contract and reaching a one-year deal with 24-year-old defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti. Sanguinetti played three game with the Canes last season, but notched zero points. He had 47 points in 60 games played with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, however.

Defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti, a former first-round draft pick, has signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.

After signing Jamie McBain to a new contract Monday, Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford took to the task of locking up young defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti to a deal. It didn't take long.

Sanguinettti has signed a one-year, two-way deal with the organization, according to Canes Country. He'll earn $700,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level. It's the second contract of Sanguinetti's young career, and he was set to become a restricted free agent this July 1 after the expiration of his entry-level deal.

Sanguinetti played 60 games with the American Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers in 2011-12, finishing the year with 47 points in those games. He registered zero points in three games with the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes hope he can challenge for a spot on the NHL roster this season.

The 24-year-old New Jersey native was originally drafted by the New York Rangers with the 21st overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft. He was acquired by the Hurricanes in June 2010 via a trade which sent a second-round pick and a sixth-round pick back to New York.

The team also announced Monday that they've signed tough AHL forward Nicolas Blanchard to a two-year, two-way contract worth the NHL league minimum of $525,000 and an AHL salary worth $105,000. The deal guarantees Blanchard at leas $125,000 per season.
