Given a national stage for the first time since winning a title with Auburn, Cam Newton couldn't deliver as the Carolina Panthers were rolled at home 36-7 Thursday night by the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

Panthers fans over at Cat Scratch Reader are ... how to put this? ... not pleased with the Cats' declawing.

An apoplectic James Dator wrote a piece Friday morning titled, "Shame On Us For Believing." Basically, as a Panthers fan, he's seen high expectations and hopes get dashed time and again, and it tends to get old:

Some prescribe to the notion of 'football gods' or some other mystical power that lords over the NFL ensuring come-uppance for those with hubris, and creating all the drama we see week in, week out. I don't believe in any omnipotent power, but I believe in the Carolina Panthers- and shame on me for doing so.

Ouch. Dator (and likely many other Panthers fans) isn't just upset Carolina lost, but how embarrassingly woeful the Panthers looked in losing to what equated to the Giants' second-team offense, with many starters out with injury. Carolina (1-2) will have a long week before looking to turn it around at the divisional foe Atlanta Falcons in Week 4.

New York Giants cornerback Corey Webster broke his right hand in Thursday night's 36-7 win over the Carolina Panthers, according to a report from Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledger.

Webster confirmed the injury, according to the article, missing part of the first half to get X-rays, but returned to play before halftime and finished the game with a hard cast on the injured hand. Webster said he would play next week when the Giants take on the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4.

This comes on a night when safety Antrel Rolle and fellow corner Jayron Hosley, who nabbed an interception off Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, were also injured during play.

Rolle was carted off the field after a collision with camera equipment on the sidelines resulted in a contusion and laceration, head coach Tom Coughlin said in the report. X-rays were negative, however, and Coughlin noted that he didn't believe the injury was very serious.

Hosley pulled a hamstring muscle in the fourth quarter after getting his jersey yanked during play, Coughlin said.

A slew of injuries to players at skill positions for the New York Giants' offense actually made the Carolina Panthers favorites before kickoff of Thursday night's matchup, but a dominating 36-7 performance by the Giants proved that they can win -- regardless of who's in the lineup.

Ed Valentine of Giants blog Big Blue View focused on journeyman backup running back Andre Brown's performance in Ahmad Bradshaw's absence after the game:

The big question after Andre Brown had the best game of his career Sunday against Tampa Bay -- 13 carries 71 yards and a touchdown -- was could he do it again? Well, 20 carries, 113 yards and two touchdowns later in a 36-7 rout of the Carolina Panthers Thursday we know the answer.

The New York Giants' running back most certainly could.

As important as Brown's performance was a shutdown effort by the Giants' defense. With the 2011 Rookie of the Year calling signals for the opposing offense, the New York defense stepped up and allowed Carolina to find pay dirt just once, defying those who doubted the squad that gave up 34 points to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

The Giants defense made a big effort to make a dangerous Cam Newton look like a lost and confused quarterback. Newton went just 15 for 30 for 242 yards and three interceptions on the night. Jason Pierre-Paul came very close to picking off Newton an additional two more times. Newton was also limited to just six rushing yards on the night.

With the win, the Giants have more than a week to prepare for next Sunday's divisional matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cam Newton's rookie year wasn't a winning one, but the Panthers quarterback did enough to be able to smile in most of his postgame press conferences. After Carolina's 36-7 loss to the Giants on Thursday night, Newton wasn't in a smiling mood. At all.

Glumness is fine on its own, but the morose "I'm looking for words that aren't 'This sucked'" bit here is even more out of character.

Cam's frustration is justified, though: the loss was the most lopsided of his NFL career, a 29-point beating that eclipses the Panthers' 30-3 defeat at the hands of the Titans in 2011, and came in the first primetime game of his promising career.

Newton threw three interceptions in the game, the most he's thrown since a loss to the Lions in 2011, in the last loss of a three-game skid. If the Panthers are going to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time since then, they'll need a stronger performance from him in Atlanta in Week 4. If not, expect more :( to follow.

The defending Super Bowl champs are rolling, rolling through the NFC South at least.

Maybe it was the dramatic comeback win last week, or maybe it's just something about the NFC South. Whatever it is, the New York Giants walked past the Carolina Panthers for a 36-7 win in primetime on Thursday night, looking no worse for wear playing on a short week.

The Giants struck quick, scoring their first touchdown of the game on their very first possession. Eli Manning hit tight end Martellus Bennett 14-yard touchdown on third down. Bennett got behind the coverage down the middle and into the end zone for his third touchdown in three games. He appears to be making good on his promise of a fresh start after leaving the Dallas Cowboys for their NFC East rivals.

New York added another 13 points in the first half, taking a 20-0 lead into the locker room at the half. Running back Andre Brown scored his first of two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter.

Carolina finally got on the board in the middle of the third quarter when Cam Newton jumped over the pile at the goal line for his second rushing touchdown of the season, and the 16th of his prodigious career.

The reigning Rookie of the Year looked anything but prodigious against the Giants. Newton threw three interceptions, the most in a single game for him since Week 11 against the Lions last season, when he threw four. Newton finished the game 16-for-30 with 242 yards, and only those picks to show for his passing effort. On the ground, Newton ran the ball six times for a grand total of six yards, despite some option looks from the Panthers early in the game.

Photo via Bob Donnan, US PRESSWIRE

Newton's three picks were part of a five-turnover night for the struggling Panthers.

Brown made his first NFL start a memorable one, working in place of an injured Ahmad Bradshaw and an all-but benched David Wilson. He finished the game with 113 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He now has a total of three touchdowns in two games and has earned an expanded role with the Giants even when Bradshaw returns.

Another less heralded member of the Giants' impressive depth chart contributed to the win with a huge game. Fourth-year wide receiver Ramses Barden had an epic game, finishing with nine catches and 138 yards. His previous best was a three-catch, 38-yard outing last year against the Saints. He had a total of nine catches all last season. Barden, a third-round pick in 2009, was filling in for an injured Hakeem Nicks.

Manning did not have the 500-yard performance he had last week, but the circumstances were a little different in this one. Working behind an offensive line that gave him all the time in the world, Manning finished the game in the fourth quarter with 27-for-35 line with 288 yards and a touchdown.

Game Ball: It has to go to the Cinderella story, Andre Brown. With the Giants line brushing aside a suspect Panthers defense, Brown made it look easy.

Photo via Jeremy Brevard, US PRESSWIRE

The going gets tougher for the defending champs next week when the travel to Philadelphia for a game against the red hot Eagles. Tom Coughlin's squad split the series with Philly last year.

Carolina drops to 1-2 on the season, disappointing fans and shocking prognosticators who predicted a big year for Newton. The Panthers are in Atlanta next week.

Giants safety Antrel Rolle sustained a knee laceration in the fourth quarter of New York's Thursday night blowout of the Panthers. The injury occurred on a pass intended for Carolina tight end Greg Olsen that sailed outside the boundary. Rolle was covering Olsen in the corner of the end zone when his momentum sent him crashing into a camera man on the sideline. He tried to jump over the bystander, but his left knee banged directly into the camera and he came down awkwardly. In addition to the laceration, he was also going to get x-rays on the knee.

The Giants secondary has suffered a slew of injuries, with both Rolle and Corey Webster getting banged up against the Panthers. Webster sustained a hand injury in the first half, but returned to the game after going to the locker room for X-rays. Prince Amukamara was making his first start of the season on Thursday after sitting out hobbled with a high ankle sprain.

Rolle was replaced by Stevie Brown, who promptly picked off Cam Newton on the goalline and took if back to the 43-yard line.

Cam Newton put the Panthers on the scoreboard for the first time on Thursday night with his second rushing touchdown of the season. At the goal line, on third-and-one in the third quarter, Newton leaped over the pile and broke the plane of the end zone.

The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year now has 16 career rushing touchdowns.

Newton's touchdown made it 23-7 with just enough time left to make it interesting. However, the Giants added another field goal to go up 26-7 on the next possession.

The New York Giants are stifling Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers offensively as the defending champions lead 20-0 at halftime in Charlotte on Thursday night.

Quarterback Eli Manning has been sharp, hitting on 19-of-25 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown. He connected with tight end Martellus Bennett for a 14-yard scoring strike in the first quarter to put the Giants up, 7-0. Placekicker Lawrence Tynes has tacked on field goals of 47-and 49-yards for the Giants as New York didn't have a problem methodically reaching Panther territory for much of the half, racking up 303 total offensive yards.

Running back Andre Brown, starting in place of the injured Ahmad Bradshaw, punched in New York's second touchdown of the half from just outside the goal line early in the second quarter to increase their lead to 17-0. Brown has rushed for 96 yards on 13 carries in the first half.

Newton went 5-for-12 passing for 90 yards and an interception through two quarters, as Carolina as only totaled 122 yards of offense.
