Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler will meet with an independent neurologist on Saturday, in hopes of being cleared to play in the Bears' game Sunday against Minnesota. Cutler suffered the concussion in a November 11 loss to Houston.

After suffering a concussion two weeks ago, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will meet with an independent neurologist on Saturday in hopes of returning to the field this Sunday against Minnesota. Cutler took part in a limited practice on Thursday, and also practiced Friday.

Following Friday's practice, Bears head coach Lovie Smith spoke about Cutler's status. Here are his quotes, via the Chicago Sun-Times:

"He was able to do more today, than he did yesterday," Smith said."He's looking good. ... It's looking better."

Cutler sustained the injury back on November 11 in the Bears 13-6 loss to Houston, and didn't play in Chicago's 32-7 loss last Monday at San Francisco. The injury happened when Texans' linebacker Tim Dobbins hit him in the head. Dobbins was fined $30,000 for the play.

Cutler is currently is listed as questionable on the Bears depth chart, and still needs to pass the final test in the NFL's concussion protocol. If he is cleared by the neurologist, Cutler will play Sunday against Minnesota.

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has passed each preliminary round of concussion testing, and the team expects Cutler to start on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, according to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is still recovering from a concussion he suffered during the team's Week 10 loss to the Houston Texans, but the fiery QB was cleared to practice on Thursday and Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that Chicago expects Cutler to start in Week 12 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Cutler engaged in limited participation with the first-team offense during practice on Thursday, but he still must be examined and cleared by an independent neurologist before he can suit up on Sunday. The Bears' season could be at the tipping point, which makes Cutler's status a huge storyline this week. The Bears have lost two straight games, and now they are behind the Green Bay Packers in the division standings. If they lose to the Vikings, they will drop to third place in the NFC North, by virtue of NFL tiebreaker rules.

Backup quarterback Jason Campbell (ribs) is also listed on the injury report. He has managed only limited participation in practice as well, and his mediocre performance through two games -- 26 for 42, 201 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions -- hasn't exactly inspired the confidence of Bears faithful.

The Vikings and Bears are set to kick off at Soldier Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was cleared to return to practice but still has to pass another test in order to play in games.

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith told reporters on Wednesday that quarterback Jay Cutler has been cleared to practice. According to the team, he will be limited in practice and still has to be cleared by an independent neurologist before he can play in a game. That's the final hurdle in the NFL's updated concussion policy, and Cutler still has to pass that examination in order to play in Week 12 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Cutler took a nasty hit from Houston Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins as he scrambled at the end of the first half in Week 10. He was ruled out for the second half of the Texans game, and ruled out early last weekend for Monday night's game against the 49ers. The Bears offense has suffered significantly while he's been out, with Jason Campbell failing to get any traction and put together scoring drives. They have scored just one touchdown in six quarters without Cutler, and have dropped both games in frustrating fashion.

The Bears are now tied for first place in the NFC North with the Packers, and the Vikings, who visit this week, are just one game back.

Chicago Bears' quarterback Jay Cutler will not play on Monday night due to the concussion he suffered against Houston; Jason Campbell will get the start.

The Chicago Bears will start Jason Campbell at quarterback on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers as Jay Cutler will not play due to the concussion he suffered against the Houston Texans. Chicago officially announced Campbell as the starter on Friday.

Cutler left during the second quarter of the Bears' 13-6 loss to the Texans after taking a helment-to-helmet hit by linebacker Tim Dobbins and was replaced by Campbell. The former Redskins and Raiders signal-caller finished the game, going 11-of-19 with 94 yards; Cutler went 7-of-14 for 40 yards before suffering the concussion. Cutler has not practiced this week and Campbell has taken the first-team snaps.

On the season, Cutler has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Campbell last started a game for the Oakland Raiders, where he started the first six games of the 2011 season before breaking his collarbone. The Bears signed him in the offseason to serve as a veteran backup to Cutler, who missed seven games last season with a broken thumb.

The Bears also announced that rookie defensive end Shea McClellin would not play against the 49ers. McClellin suffered a concussion in the first quarter against the Texans. He has 2.5 sacks on the season.

The NFL fined linebacker Tim Dobbins $30k for his hit on Jay Cutler last Sunday.

The NFL has fined Houston Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins $30k for his hit on Jay Cutler last Sunday even though he claimed that the quarterback ran into him, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.

Dobbins received an unnecessary roughness penalty on the hit in the second quarter that eventually forced Cutler to leave the game.

Cutler left the game after completing 7-of-14 passes for 40 yards and rushing three times for 37 yards. The Bears fell to the Texans, 13-6, which snapped Chicago's six-game winning streak.

Jason Campbell was 11-of-19 passing for 94 yards and rushed once for five yards in place of Cutler on Sunday.

Campbell is expected to start next Monday versus the San Francisco 49ers if Cutler is not cleared to play. The Bears signed veteran Josh McCown on Tuesday to backup Campbell.

Cutler is completing 59.2 percent of his passes this season and has thrown for 1,814 yards and 12 touchdowns. The concussion is the sixth of his career.

The Chicago Bears signed quarterback Josh McCown as Jay Cutler recovers from a concussion he suffered in Week 10.

The Chicago Bears signed free agent quarterback Josh McCown on Tuesday as Jay Cutler recovers from a concussion he suffered in the Bears 13-6 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Cutler was knocked out of the game against the Texans and was replaced by Jason Campbell. If Cutler is unable to start on Monday when the Bears take on the San Francisco 49ers, Campbell will start in his place and McCown will serve as the backup.

Chicago signed McCown last season to back up Caleb Hanie after Cutler broke his thumb in Week 11. McCown appeared in three games for the Bears, going 35-for-55 for 414 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He spent the 2012 preseason with Chicago, but was cut on Aug. 31.

McCown was a third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2002 NFL Draft out of Sam Houston State. Over the course of his NFL career he has thrown for 6,998 yards with 37 touchdowns and 44 interceptions.

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith had no update on quarterback Jay Cutler's status following a concussion on Sunday Night Football.

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith spoke with the media on Monday following the team's Sunday Night Football loss to the Houston Texans, but he did not have an update on injured quarterback Jay Cutler. According to Vaughn McClure, via Twitter, Smith would not speculate on Cutler's status for the Week 11 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

Cutler suffered a concussion in the game, and most believe it occurred because of a helmet-to-helmet hit from Texans' linebacker Tim Dobbins. Cutler returned to the game and played until the half, at which point he was ruled out for the final two quarters.

In another Tweet from McClure, Smith reiterates that Cutler didn't immediately display concussion symptoms following the hit. It seems his story checks out, as the NFL has already cleared the Bears of any wrongdoing in the handling of Cutler's injury.

While there is no status update on Cutler, he at least has company in his injury, as Alex Smith of the 49ers also missed the second half of his game on Sunday with a concussion. The two teams will meet on Monday Night Football for Week 11.

The NFL has cleared the Chicago Bears of any wrongdoing regarding the handling of quarterback Jay Cutler's concussion on Sunday against the Houston Texans.

On Sunday, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler took a huge hit from Houston Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins, but he stayed in the game and finished out the quarter before being ruled out for the final two quarters at halftime.

According to the Sun Times, the NFL has said that the Bears handled what is now confirmed as a concussion the proper way.

"Our office reviewed it with the [Bears] medical staff and it was properly handled," said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. "The team followed the correct protocol."

It's standard practice for the league to review how a team handled any significant injury, especially concussions. It's unclear if the concussion actually occurred on the huge hit, it just seems to be the most likely of suspects. This could mean that Cutler wasn't showing any signs of a concussion from the hit until halftime, or it could mean that he was injured on a later play that wasn't quite as highlight-worthy.

A similar situation occurred with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith on Sunday. He took a big hit by a St. Louis Rams player, but came back for a few plays before being ruled out with a concussion. According to the team, Smith suffered the concussion not on the big hit, but on an uneventful quarterback sneak later on in the quarter.

The league is still reviewing the hit on Cutler from Dobbins, as it could require disciplinary measures, generally a fine.
