With the NCAA Tournament roaring and then NBA Playoffs around the corner, Dan Rubenstein takes a moment to wake up sports fans who are asleep at the wheel and praying at the alter of the single thing doing the most damage to basketball, the slam dunk.

More satire from Dan on Fire:

Duke had an off-night against Creighton, but they were able to get the job done by shutting down Doug McDermott and the rest of the Bluejays.

Duke didn't play their best offensive game, but they were able to stymie one of the best scorers in the nation in Doug McDermott as they moved on to the Sweet 16 with a 66-50 win.

The Blue Devils knew they would have to put the clamps on the National Player of the Year finalist and they did. Other than a scoring spurt in the first half, the Creighton star wasn't really able to get in rhythm all game. The Bluejays had trouble just getting him the ball, and when he did end up with it, he wasn't his usual self as he battled Duke's big bodies. Credit goes to Amile Jefferson, the 6'7 freshman with a great wingspan who was forced into play with Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly in foul trouble. Thanks to him, the nation's second-leading scorer wouldn't manage a field goal for the majority of the second half, although he finished with 21 points thanks to frequent trips to the free throw line. McDermott would be the only Creighton player in double digits.

The rest of the Bluejay squad couldn't get the job done with McDermott stifled. Aside from McDermott, the team went 1-for-15 from three, and as a team, shot just 16-for-53 from the field -- 30.2 percent. That allowed a poor shooting night from the Blue Devils to stand up. Seth Curry was just 2-for-9 from downtown and Ryan Kelly was scoreless for over 37 minutes before finishing with one point. Rasheed Sulaimon led the way with 19 points.

There wasn't a whole lot of offense early. Duke jumped out to a 14-7 lead, then didn't score for the next five minutes as McDermott reeled off his team's next eight points. Creighton would lead 21-20, but the Blue Devils scored nine of the last 10 points in the first half, finishing the period 29-23 after a desperation chuck at the buzzer by Tyler Thornton connected.

Duke's distancing from the Bluejays was a methodical one -- a 14-5 run that took about 10 minutes. But it was dominant. Creighton wasn't getting good looks, wasn't getting McDermott the ball in good position, and wasn't scoring in general. There was some drama, as Creighton's bigs worked Plumlee and Kelly into foul trouble and limited their ability to contribute defensively, but the Blue Devils got up by as much as 16 and held on for the win.

Next up for Duke is Michigan State in the Sweet 16. Now, Creighton will wait to see if McDermott will return to play a senior season for his father or head for the NBA Draft.

Miami survived a late charge from Illinois and will face Marquette in the Sweet 16.

The No. 2 Miami Hurricanes staved off a tough showing from the No. 7 Illinois Fighting Illini, winning 63-59 and advancing to the Sweet 16.

Both teams started out pretty well in a half where Illinois was typically in striking distance of the Hurricanes. Tyler Griffey was keeping them in it, drilling all three of this 3-point attempts and grabbing five boards, while Shane Larkin was his typical self with eight points and four assists. Miami led by as much as seven, but the Illini would score the last four points of the half to go into the break down 29-26.

The Illini continued to give Miami fits in the second half, using a 15-6 run at the end to take a 54-52 lead with three minutes left. Miami would take the lead back thanks to a clutch 3-pointer from Larkin. A questionable out-of-bounds call gave Miami the ball back with 36 seconds left, and they made their necessary free throws to send the Illini packing.

Larkin finished the game with 17 points and five assists. Rion Brown came off the bench and scored 19 points to lead the Hurricanes. Kenny Kadji chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Paul was the big star for Illinois, racking up 18 points.

Miami will go on to play No. 3 Marquette in the Sweet 16 next weekend.

Sadly, Marshall Henderson's season is over. But his celebrations will live on forever.

With a loss on a La Salle buzzer-beater, Marshall Henderson's NCAA Tournament and his season is over.

That means we won't be seeing any more celebrations like this:

I believe it was Nate Dogg who once said: "Hey hey hey hey/drain threes every day."

Henderson's antics, on-court and slightly off it, have made him a star this season, his first for the Rebels. Sadly, he wasn't as potent in the NCAA Tournament as he had been as he led his team to an SEC Tournament title - he shot 14-for-42 between his team's two games, just 7-of-27 from downtown. But here's to another season of Henderson

After a close game throughout, La Salle became the third double-digit seed to earn a trip to the Sweet 16 with a win at the buzzer.

With the game tied at 74, Tyrone Garland sent No. 13 La Salle to the Sweet 16 on a game-winning shot with 2.5 seconds left. Garland's heroics lifted the Explorers to a 76-74 win over the Ole Miss Rebels Sunday evening in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament

For more on the story, visit Red Cup Rebellion.

The game was close throughout, and La Salle was led by Ramon Galloway, who was red-hot from the field. His 24 points were a game high and he got 18 of them on 6-10 shooting from three.

Not surprisingly, Ole Miss's Marshall Henderson led the scoring for the Rebels and he gave his team the lead back after trailing for much of the first 30 minutes. He capped a 7-0 run with a three that put the Rebels up by four with just under 10 minutes to play.

Henderson, of course, took more shots than anyone else in the game, and wasn't very efficient doing it. He was 8-21 from the field and a poor 4-15 from long range. He came up with another huge play with 6:39 left in a tie game and the score tied. Henderson took the ball to the hole and scored, plus the foul, pumping his fists and showing a bit of his legendary enthusiasm.

But the Ole Miss attack wasn't just Henderson. Murphy Holloway made his presence felt with a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

When the Rebels took a five point lead with under five minutes to play, it looked like they had started to separate themselves from the Explorers. Then, Sam Mills came down the court and was fouled while draining a three. He missed the free throw, but Jerrell Wright grabbed the rebound and laid it in to tie the game and complete the rare five-point play.

The lead then changed hands several times down the stretch, setting up an eventful final minute. First, Henderson took an ill-advised shot with the shot clock running down that did not draw iron. The Explorers got the ball on the turnover, leading to Garland's game-winner. He finished with 17 points off the bench.

They did the chicken dance... again. (Christophe Varidel seems to be a real fan, and Atlantic Sun player of the year Sherwood Brown is getting in on the fun as well.)

Forget Eagles, guys. FGCU's nickname is the Chickens.

Have you ever seen a player get love from the announcers after winning?

Basically, if you don't love Florida Gulf Coast, there is something wrong with you. They're throwing down huge dunks, they're doing the silliest celebrations known to man, they're having oodles of fun on the court, their coach is a young, excitable guy and there's nothing wrong with them.

And here's the thing: they're not that bad. I wrote about this team a week before the tourney, and although I didn't think this was likely, you could see things about them that made an upset over Georgetown seem like it wasn't the least likely thing. Ken Pomeroy's stats show that Brett Comer has the No. 3 assist rate in the nation, and Atlantic Sun defensive player of the year Bernard Thompson has the No. 5 steal rate in the nation. That's out of every player at 347 schools. They have talent, and let's hope they show up against Florida. (Nobody will be rooting for Florida.)
