<p>Pittsburgh won 4-3, as Ottawa's late comeback fell short.</p> <p>The <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.silversevensens.com/">Senators</a> made it interesting, but the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.pensburgh.com/">Penguins</a> held on for a 4-3 win in Game 2 to take a 2-0 series lead.</p>
<p>Sidney Crosby scored three times in the first 21:15, and Brenden Morrow's goal in the second period kept the surging Senators at arm's length heading into the third.</p>
<p>Ottawa didn't delay their comeback attempt. <span>Jean-Gabriel Pageau</span> continued his strong playoffs debut with a goal just 2:01 into the frame. To be honest, I have no idea what <span>Tomas Vokoun</span> was trying to accomplish by abandoning his net.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2642439/senators3.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2642439/senators3_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Senators3_medium"></a> <br id="1368843281683"></p>
<p>Nonetheless, the Penguins kept pressing. Ottawa was outshot 42-22 in the game, and the disparity showed through again in the third. <span>Robin Lehner</span> was brilliant filling in for <span>Craig Anderson</span>, stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced. His save on <span>Evgeni Malkin</span> in tight was his best of the night.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2642487/lehnersave.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2642487/lehnersave_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Lehnersave_medium"></a> <br id="1368843312711"></p>
<p>The Senators pulled Lehner late, but couldn't break through to tie it.</p>
<h4>This is over if Sidney Crosby doesn't go without a point again, right?</h4>
<blockquote>
<p><i>If Crosby gets going, the Senators probably don't have a way to stop him.</i></p>
</blockquote>
<p>That's what we said before Game 2, and it couldn't have been more accurate. Crosby was playing at a ridiculously high level from the first puck drop, and the Senators just couldn't keep up with him. His hat trick in the first 21:15 was impressive, but so were the countless scoring opportunities he set up throughout the game.</p>
<h4>Is Erik Karlsson hurting the Senators more than he's helping?</h4>
<p>It seems that way. Karlsson only played 15:37, by far the least minutes of any other Sens blueliner. He was also on the ice for two of <span>Sidney Crosby's</span> goals. He's definitely playing at a slower pace than the competition.</p>
<h4>Will Vokoun keep outplaying Anderson?</h4>
<p>Statistically? Yes. Anderson was pulled after giving up three goals on 21 shots. Robin Lehner clearly outplayed Anderson. Vokoun also gave up three goals, and at least two of them looked stoppable. Not his best game.</p>
<p> </p>

<p>Another overtime for Boston, a battle in California, and sweet hockey GIFs: what else do you need?</p> <p>Thursday night saw one playoff series begin and another continue with an exciting Game 2. Here are all the highlights, GIF-style!</p>
<p>In Boston, the <a href="https://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Bruins</a> and <a href="https://www.blueshirtbanter.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Rangers</a> played 30 minutes without a goal, then scored four within a 10-minute span, then played another 30 minutes without a goal before <span>Brad Marchand</span> won Game 1 in overtime on a perfect feed from <span>Patrice Bergeron</span>.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637245/bostonwins3.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637245/bostonwins3_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Bostonwins3_medium"></a> <br id="1368761238459"></p>
<p>Forcing the Bruins and Rangers to waste 15 minutes of overtime seems silly when <span>Johnny Boychuk</span> could have ended it in the last tick of the clock in regulation:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637073/puckpost.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637073/puckpost_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Puckpost_medium"></a> <br id="1368761138140"></p>
<p>Before all that, they exchange a pair of goals each, including a wobbler by <span>Zdeno Chara</span> that <span>Henrik Lundqvist</span> helped over the line.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636769/oopshenrik.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636769/oopshenrik_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Oopshenrik_medium"></a> <br id="1368761290928"></p>
<p>Lundqvist didn't look so hot on that play. He looked better in the first period when he used off a yoga pose to cover this puck behind him:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636623/henrikpuck.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636623/henrikpuck_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Henrikpuck_medium"></a> <br id="1368761706017"><br id="1368761666081"></p>
<p>The Rangers scored their goals in a 17-second span separated by the second intermission. First <span>Ryan McDonagh</span> scored with 1.3 seconds left in the second period. Then Derek Stepan gave them a lead 14 seconds into the third.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636817/rangersg1.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636817/rangersg1_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Rangersg1_medium"></a> <br id="1368761354968"></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636905/rangerg2.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636905/rangerg2_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Rangerg2_medium"></a> <br id="1368761370012"></p>
<p>Earlier in the game, Johnny Boychuk took a hit from <span>Taylor Pyatt</span> that slammed Boychuk's head against the boards.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636745/headhit.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636745/headhit_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Headhit_medium"></a> <br id="1368761583747"></p>
<p>In other near-disaster scenarios, <span>Michael Del Zotto</span> is lucky he turned after deflecting this Bergeron shot.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636639/delzottoface.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636639/delzottoface_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Delzottoface_medium"></a> <br id="1368761560323"></p>
<p>And Lundqvist wasn't alone in benefiting from friendly iron. <span>Tuukka Rask</span> needed his crossbar too:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636551/crossbar.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636551/crossbar_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Crossbar_medium"></a> <br id="1368761441066"></p>
<p>Out in the Western Conference, the <a href="https://www.fearthefin.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">San Jose Sharks</a> were looking to even their series with the <a href="https://www.jewelsfromthecrown.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Los Angeles Kings</a> in Game 2, but didn't get off to a great start after <span>Jeff Carter</span> scored on the Kings' first shot of the game:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637253/carterg.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637253/carterg_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Carterg_medium"></a></p>
<p>But San Jose would finally manage to put the puck past Quick midway through the second on a sweet passing play that resulted in a <span>Patrick Marleau</span> goal:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637371/sharksg.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637371/sharksg_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Sharksg_medium"></a> <br id="1368763471965"></p>
<p>Jeff Carter took a charging penalty for this crushing hit on <span><span>Marc-Edouard Vlasic</span>:</span></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637461/vlasic.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637461/vlasic_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Vlasic_medium"></a></p>
<p>The Kings would have a scary moment of their own when <span>Anze Kopitar</span> took a puck to the face:</p>
<p><a href="http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610879/m5NxbVY.gif"><img src="http://cdn0.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610879/m5NxbVY_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="M5nxbvy_medium"></a></p>
<p>Kopitar would miss about half of the third period before returning.</p>
<p>Vlasic seemed to be okay after that hard hit from Carter, and would score his first playoff goal to put the Sharks ahead 3-2 in the third:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637587/sharksg2.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637587/sharksg2_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Sharksg2_medium"></a></p>
<p>But in a stunning turn of events, the Kings would convert twice on the power play in the final minutes of the third to tie and then take the lead:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637659/kingsgoal5.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637659/kingsgoal5_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Kingsgoal5_medium"></a> <br id="1368766920843"></p>
<p><a href="http://i.imgur.com/m5NxbVY.gif"></a></p>
<p>The Kings won the game 4-3, and head to San Jose up 2-0 in the series. <br id="1368765181023"></p>

<p>The Sharks took the lead in the 3rd, but the Kings were able to score twice on the power play in the final minutes to win the game 4-3. </p> <p>After the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.fearthefin.com/">Sharks</a> finally solved <span>Jonathan Quick</span> in <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2013/5/16/4339062/sharks-vs-kings-game-2-update-patrick-marleau-jeff-carter-hit-vlasic/in/4100995" target="_blank">the second period of Game 2</a>, the third period began with the score tied 2-2.</p>
<p>The <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.jewelsfromthecrown.com/">Kings</a> got a scare early in the final period when <span>Anze Kopitar</span> took a puck to the face:</p>
<p><a href="http://cdn2.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610887/m5NxbVY.gif"><img src="http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610887/m5NxbVY_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="M5nxbvy_medium"></a></p>
<p>Kopitar would miss about half a period before returning. The Kings had to scramble their forward lines to compensate while he was out, as they were already missing <span>Jarret Stoll</span> due to his injury in game one.</p>
<p><a href="http://i.imgur.com/m5NxbVY.gif"></a></p>
<p>After taking a hard hit at the end of the second period, <span>Marc-Edouard Vlasic</span> would return to start the third, and would score midway through the period to put the Sharks ahead 3-2:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637587/sharksg2.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637587/sharksg2_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Sharksg2_medium"></a> <br id="1368765140795"></p>
<p>San Jose would hold the lead until the Kings tied the game on a late 5-on-3 power play:</p>
<p><a href="http://cdn0.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610911/hg2f3A0.gif"><img src="http://cdn1.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610911/hg2f3A0_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Hg2f3a0_medium"></a></p>
<p>via <a href="http://i.imgur.com/hg2f3A0.gif">i.imgur.com</a></p>
<p>And then in a stunner, the Kings would score AGAIN, this time 5-on-4:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637659/kingsgoal5.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637659/kingsgoal5_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Kingsgoal5_medium"></a></p>
<p>The Kings scored their two goals just 22 seconds apart to win game two, and lead the series 2-0 as it heads back to San Jose.</p>
<h4>Will <span>Antti Niemi</span> rebound from a merely average Game 1?</h4>
<p id="paragraph3" class="pgh-paragraph">It didn't look good early, as Niemi gave up a goal on the first shot of the game for the Kings, but Niemi settled in and looked solid for most of the night. It's hard to fault him for any of the goals.</p>
<h4>Who will replace the key minutes Jarret Stoll provides?</h4>
<p id="paragraph4" class="pgh-paragraph"><span>Brad Richardson</span> saw more playing time for the Kings in the absence of Stoll, and made the best of his opportunity with a nice assist on the second goal of the game for the Kings.</p>
<h4>Is <span>Slava Voynov</span> turning into the postseason's most potent defenseman?</h4>
<p id="paragraph5" class="pgh-paragraph">Voynov didn't score in game two, though he did have three hits and nearly 22 minutes of ice time.</p>
<p class="pgh-paragraph">The series continues with Game 3 on Saturday.</p>

<p>Kopitar went down bleeding, but was back in action after a short trip to the locker room.</p> <p>Only a few minutes into the third period of Game 2 between the <a href="https://www.fearthefin.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">San Jose Sharks</a> and the <a href="https://www.jewelsfromthecrown.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Los Angeles Kings</a>, center <span>Anze Kopitar</span> took a puck to the face and went down to the ice bleeding from the mouth:</p>
<p><a href="http://cdn0.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610845/m5NxbVY.gif"><img src="http://cdn1.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610845/m5NxbVY_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="M5nxbvy_medium"></a></p>
<p>Kopitar headed to the dressing room, and the Kings' forward lines were scrambled to compensate. Los Angeles was already without center <span>Jarret Stoll</span> after his injury in Game 1 of the series, and without Kopitar the team suddenly looked very thin down the middle. Kopitar would return to the game after missing nearly half a period.</p>
<p>Kopitar is the most talented offensive player for the Kings, and plays the toughest minutes of any of their forwards. When the Sharks and Kings met in the playoffs two years ago, Kopitar missed that series and the Sharks won it in six games.</p>

The Kings would extend their advantage with another early goal, as <span>Drew Doughty</span> scored on a power play after a nice backhand pass from <span>Brad Richardson</span>:</p>
<p><a href="http://cdn0.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610769/Yh1pdoZ.gif"><img src="http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610769/Yh1pdoZ_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Yh1pdoz_medium"></a></p>
<p>But at 9:47 of the second period, <span>Patrick Marleau</span> would finally solve <span>Jonathan Quick</span> on this beautiful passing play:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637371/sharksg.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637371/sharksg_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Sharksg_medium"></a> <br id="1368761465566"></p>
<p>Marleau's goal came assisted by <span>Joe Thornton</span> and <span>Logan Couture</span>. It was the first goal they managed to score on Quick in...quite a while:</p>

<p><span>Vlasic went straight to the dressing room after the hit. </span></p>
<p>The Sharks led in shots, 24-13, after 40 minutes of play.</p>

<p>The Bruins dominated overtime and hit every piece of metal behind Henrik Lundqvist before Marchand's winner.</p> <p><span>Brad Marchand's</span> goal 15:40 into overtime gave the Boston Bruins the victory in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal with the New York Rangers. Marchand converted on a two-on-two pass from <span>Patrice Bergeron</span> after the Bruins dominated the overtime period.</p>
<p>Here is the winner, which seemed inevitable with Boston outshooting the Rangers 16-5 during the extra frame:</p>
<p><a href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637245/bostonwins3.gif" target="_blank"><img alt="Bostonwins3_medium" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637245/bostonwins3_medium.gif"></a> <br id="1368759204492"></p>
<p>The teams never would have reached overtime if not for some heroics and and a bit of luck in the final minute of regulation. <span>Dan Girardi</span> laid out for a stomach block of <span>Tyler Seguin's</span> shot with 22 seconds left, then <span>Johnny Boychuk's</span> would-be buzzer-beater rang off the post with one tenth of a second remaining in regulation.</p>
<p><a href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637073/puckpost.gif" target="_blank"><img alt="Puckpost_medium" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637073/puckpost_medium.gif"></a></p>
<p>Of course, the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.blueshirtbanter.com/">Rangers</a> might not have needed overtime if <span>Henrik Lundqvist</span> had been his usual stellar self. Coming off two consecutive shutouts to eliminate the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.japersrink.com/">Washington Capitals</a> in the first round, Lundqvist allowed two goals in Game 1 that he stops more often than not.</p>
<p>This goal on a soft shot by <span>Zdeno Chara</span> was particularly regrettable:</p>
<p><a href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636769/oopshenrik.gif" target="_blank"><img alt="Oopshenrik_medium" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636769/oopshenrik_medium.gif"></a> <br id="1368758125621"></p>
<p>The <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/">Bruins</a> also hit the post or crossbar several other times throughout the game, including twice in overtime. <span>David Krejci</span>, <span>Jaromir Jagr</span> and <span>Gregory Campbell</span>, on a deflection of another Boychuk shot, each had reason to curse the iron behind Lundqvist.</p>
<p>After spending the first half of the game scoreless, Chara's goal opened scoring and then the teams combined for three goals in a three-minute span on either side of the second intermission. <span>Ryan McDonagh</span> scored with 1.3 seconds left in the second period to tie it at 1-1, then <span>Derek Stepan</span> gave the Rangers a lead 14 seconds into the third period.</p>
<p><a href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636905/rangerg2.gif" target="_blank"><img alt="Rangerg2_medium" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636905/rangerg2_medium.gif"></a></p>
<p>But Torey Krug tied it with his first NHL goal at 2:55, and the teams wouldn't score again until Marchand's winner 33 minutes later.</p>
<p>Of note, high-paid but struggling Rangers star <span>Brad Richards</span> played just 12:57 in this game, buried by coach John Tortorella and mustering just one shot on goal.</p>
<p>Before the game, we considered three questions for this series. Here is how those played out in Game 1</p>
<h4>Can Tuukka Rask outplay Henrik Lundqvist?</h4>
<p class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph4">For this game, yes. Lundqvist allowed a couple he would like back, and the Bruins beat him but for his posts on multiple other occasions.</p>
<h4>Will home ice be a factor?</h4>
<p class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph5">So far, the Bruins have held serve. But each of these teams saw in their previous series how losing just once at home can alter the direction.</p>
<h4>You knew this was coming: who gets going first, Tyler Seguin or <span>Rick Nash</span>?</h4>
<p>It's a question that still remains. Neither Seguin nor Nash got their first playoff goals on this night, though each had a few prime opportunities.</p>

<p>The Kings lead 1-0 at the end of the first period thanks to an early goal.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.fearthefin.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">San Jose Sharks</a> and <a href="https://www.jewelsfromthecrown.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Los Angeles Kings</a> opened Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals with altered lineups, due to <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2013/5/16/4337410/raffi-torres-suspension-sharks-stanley-cup-playoffs-2013" target="_blank">an incident in Game 1 </a>that resulted in an injury for <span>Jarret Stoll</span> and a suspension for <span>Raffi Torres</span>.</p>
<p><span>Jeff Carter</span> would begin the scoring with an unassisted goal just 3:06 into the game, on the first shot for the Kings:</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637253/carterg.gif"><img src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2637253/carterg_medium.gif" class="photo" alt="Carterg_medium"></a> <br id="1368759363327"></p>
<p>The Sharks would have two power-play opportunities in the period, but would come up empty on both of them. Continuing from his Game 1 shutout, <span>Jonathan Quick</span> has now held the Sharks scoreless for four consecutive periods of playoff hockey. San Jose led the period in shots, 11-4, but trailed 1-0 at the end of the first.</p>

<p>The teams exchanged late power plays and near-misses as the go-ahead goal proved elusive.</p> <p>The <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.blueshirtbanter.com/">New York Rangers</a> and <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/">Boston Bruins</a> were tied 2-2 and headed to overtime in Game 1 after each team failed to score on late power play opportunities.</p>
<p>On the Bruins' power play, <span>Dan Girardi</span> may have saved the game with a crucial shot block with 22 seconds left, and <span>Johnny Boychuk</span> hit the post with a mere tenth of a second remaining in regulation.</p>
<p>Goals were slow to come in the first half of the game, but there was a veritable outburst in a 2:57 span on either side of the second intermission.</p>
<p><span>Ryan McDonagh</span> tied it at 1-1 with just 1.3 seconds left in the second period. The Rangers then picked up right where they left off, taking a 2-1 lead just 14 seconds into the third period. <span>Derek Stepan</span> shot a one-timer through a screen from the high slot.</p>
<p><a href="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636905/rangerg2.gif" target="_blank"><img alt="Rangerg2_medium" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2636905/rangerg2_medium.gif"></a> <br id="1368754764735"></p>
<p>But the Bruins put the lie to any broadcast theories of "momentum" by tying it at 2-2 just 2:41 after Stepan's goal.</p>
<p><span>Torey Krug</span>, making his playoff debut and playing just his fourth NHL game of any kind, scored on an uncontested shot that beat <span>Henrik Lundqvist</span> cleanly.</p>
<p><a href="http://cdn2.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610691/msZZDvA.gif"><img alt="Mszzdva_medium" class="photo" src="http://cdn1.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1610691/msZZDvA_medium.gif"></a></p>
<p>That would be the last goal of regulation, though it wasn't for a lack of chances.</p>
<p><span>Patrice Bergeron</span> took a hooking penalty at 16:16, giving the Rangers a golden chance to score another late one. Instead <span>John Moore</span> knocked <span>Rich Peverley</span> into <span>Tuukka Rask</span>, garnering an interference penalty and putting the Bruins on the power play as time wound down.</p>
<p>That's when <span>Tyler Seguin's</span> one-timer was headed for the net but for Girardi's shot block, and Boychuck came just inches from winning it at literally the last possible moment:</p>
