ICE UP, SON!

Steve Smith really gave it to Aqib Talib Monday night. Outplayed him on the field, then sent all sorts of trash talk his way after the Panthers beat the Patriots, including the instant classic "ICE UP, SON!" during a walk-off interview. Charlotte-based fast food purveyor Bojangles' seized the opportunity to support, promote, and troll all at once:

Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei has been one of the best defensive tackles in football this season, and he's only a rookie.

They said he didn't bring it on every down. They said he wore down late in games. They said his health would be an issue. What they forgot to mention was what a high percentage of his team's snaps he played, how versatile he was, or how consistently he dominated the point of attack.

Star Lotulelei was among the most picked apart prospects leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft. He was a prime target as a player who was highly ranked coming into the season. A health scare at the NFL Scouting Combine caused him to drop to the Carolina Panthers, and they couldn't be happier.

Loutlelei is already one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL, regardless of age. He's stepped in and dominated for the Panthers from day one, like most would have expected before the pre-draft nitpicking took place. The New England Patriots found out first hand on Monday Night Football the type of impact Lotulelei can have on the game.

It would be one thing if Loutlelei could only attack an offense from one spot. He would be limited by scheme, which would have explained his draft day fall. On Monday night, Lotulelei showed how his skills can transcend scheme. He's capable of lining up all over the defensive line and making life a living hell for offensive lines from every spot.

Take his sack for example. Lotulelei is lined up as a 3-technique, which is an excellent use of his length and burst. The Patriots refuse to recognize his presence, and Lotulelei makes him pay.

Just look at how quickly Lotulelei (No. 98) ends up in the backfield. The split was too wide, and no interior offensive lineman can deal with his quickness off the snap.

Most commonly, Lotulelei is asked to plug the middle of the line of scrimmage and free up space for Carolina's defensive ends and linebackers. He does this unbelievably well, eating up double teams on a consistent basis. On one drive, Lotulelei ate up a double team on one play and dropped back into coverage a few plays later. The comfortability in space confused the Patriots, freeing up Greg Hardy for a sack.

Lotulelei is having a big impact on one of the best front sevens in football

Those are the little things. They often go unnoticed, but Lotulelei is having a big impact on one of the best front sevens in football. Without his ability to eat up blockers and cause offensive lines to scheme for him, would Charles Johnson be as productive as he is? Would Luke Kuechly and A.J. Klein be cleaning up as many tackles? Maybe not. The Panthers' front seven is the result of a lot of moving parts coming together on a consistent basis: a deep, talented rotation of defensive lineman, of which Lotlelei is a key component, to go with some of the fastest linebackers in the NFL, both in thinking and in foot speed.

We love Carolina but...

From Cam Newton to Luke Kuechly to "Riverboat Ron," there's so much to like about the Panthers, except for one person. That and more in Matt Ufford’s Fumblr.

Don't expect Lotulelei to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. What he's doing isn't showing up on the stat sheet all the time like other players in this class. But whether or not Lotulelei finishes the season with hardware or not shouldn't diminish what he's been able to accomplish from the moment he stepped on the field.

If the Panthers keep winning, Loutlelei will only get to prove himself on bigger and bigger stages. The attention will come, even if only from opposing offensive lines.

The contest had it all from some trash-talking by Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith and Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib, to a controversial ending that will be leading plenty of sports shows on Tuesday.

On the final play, Tom Brady threw into the end zone for Rob Gronkowski, who was hauled down by Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly with the ball in flight. However, the flag initially thrown was picked up, the refs ruling the ball was uncatchable due to a Carolina defender intercepting the pass.

Prior to that madness, there was the third quarter, which did not feature a single incompletion by either quarterback.

Over at Cat Scratch Reader, Edgar Salmingo Jr. wrote about the all-around game authored by Carolina:

The Panthers showed up to play under the Monday night lights, against a high-profile opponent in the New England Patriots. Cam Newton was a world of fire, with 3 TD passes, many long scrambles on 3rd down, and last, but not least, a clutch final drive with a TD to Ted Ginn, Jr., with the game on the line. The defense bent, but did not break, doing enough to keep the team in the game. Keeping the dangerous Tom Brady and Bill Belichick to only 20 points with 2 weeks to plan is an admirable performance by the defense.

Ultimately, the game makes both teams 7-3 on the year. For Carolina, it sits in the No. 5 seed, trailing the New Orleans Saints by two games in the NFC South. New England is tied with the Indianapolis Colts for the coveted second-seed, well ahead of any competition for the AFC East.

Greg Knopping of Pats Pulpit is staying positive despite a tough loss:

Overall, as painful as the final result is, especially when considering the call, this isn't a bad loss. The Patriots were on the road, against a very good NFC team, and played some of their best football of the year on offense. And for those keeping track at home, yes, this is the Patriots second loss of the season on a highly questionable call. But I think I can speak for most Patriots fans when I say that they'll be happy with bad breaks now if the good breaks come for the Patriots in the playoffs.

The Carolina Panthers defeated the New England Patriots 24-20 on Monday Night Football, with one of the stranger endings you will ever see.

On the final play, with New England 17 yards away, Tom Brady fired a pass into the end zone only to be intercepted. However a flag came down, and replays showed Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly clearly tackling the intended receiver, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski with the ball in flight. However, the flag was picked up.

After the game, referee Clete Blakeman explains why the flag was put back in the pocket, courtesy of masslive.com:

"There were two officials that came in. One was the umpire and the other one was our side judge and there was a discussion at that point as to the, in essence, the catchability of the ball due to it's location. So it was determined at that point in time that when the primary contact occurred on the tight end that the ball, in essence, was coming in underthrown and, in essence, it was immediately at that point intercepted at the front end of the end zone. So there was a determination that, in essence, uncatchability, that the ball was intercepted at or about the same time the primary contact against the receiver occurred."

Blakeman also says after watching the replay, he stands by the call:

"Yeah, in review, yeah. I think so. I'm pleased that ... well, two situations. You never like to end the game with some controversy like that on a call, but I'm pleased that our officiating crew got together and communicated and discussed it and, ultimately, I believe we got it right. So that to me is the part that is coming away from it. I'm pleased that our crew was able to discuss it and make the call right."

Ultimately, the loss could have major playoff ramifications. Certainly, New England is going to make the playoffs in the AFC and will take the AFC East crown. The loss could affect seeding though, as the Patriots are 7-3 and chasing the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos, who are both 9-1.

While Gronkowski admitted that he felt he was held by Panthers second-year linebacker Luke Kuechly on the final play of the game, he told Field Yates of ESPN Boston that the game can't be boiled down to a single play:

"It is how it is now, and they took the call back and can't do anything about it," Gronkowski said. "And that's not when the game is [won] and [lost]. They're a very good team, they played tough all four quarters."

Gronkowski, 24, finished the game with five receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown, including a 23-yard reception on a fourth down with less than a minute remaining to keep the Patriots' chances alive. With just three seconds left, Brady looked to the end zone where Gronkowski was covered by Kuechly.

While the pass came up short of the 6'6 tight end and was intercepted by safety Robert Lester, a flag thrown from the back of the end zone appeared to give the Patriots a pass interference penalty that would set up the team for one final chance at a come-from-behind victory.

"When they threw the flag, that's what I thought it was going to be. And it was waved off, so I can't do anything about it."

Gronkowski has 24 receptions for 343 yards and two touchdowns in four games since returning from offseason back and forearm surgeries.

Steve Smith and Aqib Talib battled on the field and Smith continued the back-and-forth with some trash talk after the game.

Steve Smith and Aqib Talib have a history of going back-and-forth, and the two added another chapter to their rivalry on Monday night. They didn't take very long to get into it and it's safe to say they won't be best friends anytime soon.

The back-and-forth started when Smith caught a pass in front of Talib and the Patriots cornerback held onto Smith's leg well after the whistle. Smith attempted to pull away, while Talib continued to hold on. Smith then pushed back and the two had to be separated. Talib was flagged on the play.

And then Round 2 promptly came with Smith and Talib getting into it again on the same drive. That scuffle ended with some pushing, shoving and facemask grabbing.

Smith got the better of the matchup on the field, catching four passes for 62 yards while the Panthers came away with the win. After the game, he didn't hold back from saying how he felt about the Talib, beginning with this classic quote as he walked off the field.

Smith wasn't done:

The veteran wideout has a well-established library of amazing trash talk quotes, most recently crushing Rams' CB Janoris Jenkins in Week 7.
It didn't sound like there was any love lost on Talib's side either:

The Patriots despotic coach is sick of his team falling on the wrong side of these controversial endings.

As you might expect, Bill Belichick was not in the best mood after the Patriots' narrow loss to the Panthers, which ended with yet another officiating dispute that went against New England.

Belichick was extra frosty with the media, trotting out the usual non-answers and cliches ... until he went a little further discussing the final play of the game. He did not keep his team on the field or get to speak with any of the refs before they left the field.

This is not unfamiliar territory for the Hall of Fame coach, who specifically cited a prior disputed ending against the Ravens: "Last time I tried to ask an official about a call, that was the wrong thing to do ... so, I have no idea." This was the scene at the end of that game (when a FG went over the upright and was not reviewed):

Tom Brady, however, did give the officials an earful before they were able to get off the field.

According to the Patriots head coach, this was the "fourth time" that New England fell on the wrong side of a questionable call to decide a game. The most recent and egregious example came earlier this year in Week 7, when the Patriots were flagged for a 15-yard penalty on a missed game-ending field goal against the Jets. Belichick disagreed with that rule interpretation, and even though he didn't get a chance to talk to the refs this time, we imagine he disagrees with this ending too. His postgame remarks:

This wasn't quite the Packers-Seahawks MNF disaster of last season, but it was still chaotic. It should be a fun Tuesday morning in New England.

The Panthers-Patriots game featured one of the strangest endings of the year. A bad call, two pissed off quarterbacks and some embarrassed officials.

Nothing's easy. The Carolina Panthers fought hard for a 24-20 win over the Patriots, cementing their place among the ranks of Super Bowl contenders. It just couldn't end without controversy.

Improbably, the Patriots drove down to the Panthers' 18-yard line. Tom Brady had one last shot at the end zone. Rob Gronkowski doesn't get wrapped up too often (high-five, bro!), but one ref thought he did here and threw a flag. The refs picked up the flag and declared that the game was over.

It's been a pretty rough weekend for the officials -- the regular officials. Trent Williams was allegedly called a "fat ass" by one zebra. Now this.

Tom Brady wasn't happy about it. And neither was Ryan Mallet, who made a cameo in that impromptu meeting with the ref racing to get off the field.

After the game, things got really strange at Bill Belichick's press conference. Silence brought on by audio problems, timid reporters and a dazed coach at the podium. Watch:

Here's Mike Pereira on the call:

You could make a case that the pass might have been uncatachable, but the flag was thrown and you should stay with it. My thoughts
— Mike Pereira (@MikePereira) November 19, 2013

ESPN's official expert, er, expert official, er, rules guy, stuck to the uncatchable thing. I can't imagine we've heard the last opinions on the matter.

The flag was thrown for defensive pass interference. As explained by Pats Pulpit, it met the requirements for DPI, except for one big gray area ... the uncatchable ball notion. From Rule 8, Section 5:

Permissible Acts:

(c) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players.

That and more in Matt Ufford’s Fumblr.

Was it uncatchable? That's what we'll be debating for awhile. Gronk was behind where Robert Lester intercepted the ball. Had he been positioned there, even without Kuechly wrapped around him, it looks like Lester had the ball, thus making it uncatchable. But it's tough to say for sure. That's what the refs thought:

So there was a determination that, in essence, uncatchability, that the ball was intercepted at or about the same time the primary contact against the receiver occurred.

The back judge who threw the flag would have only seen Gronk and Kuechly. The refs who overruled the DPI call made the determination that the ball was uncatchable.

Officials didn't screw up the call so much as they screwed up the explanation of it by not explaining it at all until after the game.
