The Detroit Red Wings completely shut down the New Jersey Devils on Friday night, while the Carolina Hurricanes used a four-goal third period to hand the San Jose Sharks their second loss in as many nights.

The New Jersey Devils have had a hard time scoring goals this season, and nobody understands that more than goaltender Cory Schneider.

Heading into their game against Detroit on Friday the Devils had scored just 21 goals in Schneider's 13 starts this season, which explains his 4-5-4 record despite a .925 save percentage.

It was more of the same on Friday night in a 3-1 loss to the Red Wings.

The Devils once again managed just one goal for Schneider, but even worse than that was the fact they couldn't even generate many chances, registering just 11 shots on goal against a depleted Red Wings team that was playing without its two best players in Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.

That's just not going to get it done.

The Devils' 11 shots on goal was the lowest total for a team in the NHL this season, while only one other team had fewer than 14 (Calgary managed just 13 in a 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks back on Nov. 12). It's just the 11th time since 2005-06 that a team recorded 11 shots or fewer in a game. Not surprisingly, those teams were 1-8-2 in said games.

Elsewhere, the Carolina Hurricanes stunned the San Jose Sharks with four goals in the third period to complete a 5-3 come-from-behind win. Jordan Staal helped lead the way with a goal and an assist.

Five Questions

On Friday we asked you five burning questions about the days games. These are your cool, soothing answers.

1. Who will rebound with a win tonight, the Detroit Red Wings or the New Jersey Devils?

It was Detroit, and it turns out all they needed to pick up a win was getting away from Joe Louis Arena. Johan Franzen and Tomas Tatar helped provide the offense for the Red Wings, while backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson improved his record to 8-0-1 on the season.

2. Who will win the battle of Western powers in Chicago?

Anaheim was on the winning end of a 3-2 shootout decision in Chicago thanks to goals from Nick Bonino and Kyle Palmieri in the skills competition.

3. How does Colorado react to being blown out by a bad team?

With a much better performance. After getting run out of the building in Edmonton on Thursday night, losing 8-2 to the Oilers, the Avalanche completed their trip through Alberta on Friday with a 3-2 win over the Flames. Maxime Talbot had a goal and an assist in the win, while Nathan MacKinnon's third period goal proved to be the game-winner.

4. Can Roberto Luongo help the Vancouver Canucks gain ground in the Pacific Division?

They needed overtime to pick up a 3-2 win, and Roberto Luongo was a big part of it. The Canucks did allow Phoenix to score a pair of third period goals to erase a two-goal deficit and force the extra period, but it's hard to say Luongo didn't play well when he had to face 39 shots and the Canucks were outshot 18-8 in the third. The Canucks and Coyotes are now tied with 37 points in the standings.

5. Will Ryan Suter play under 26 minutes against the Columbus Blue Jackets?

He did, logging 23:37 in Minnesota's 4-0 loss in Columbus. Incredibly, it's just the third time in 31 games this season that he's played fewer than 26 minutes in a single game. The fact the game was pretty well in hand in the third period probably played a role as he didn't see the ice over the final nine minutes of regulation.

Impact Moment

The one play or moment from Friday that is going to be making headlines over the next couple of days.

While it's hard to put the blame for a team's loss on a penalty call when they managed just 11 shots on goal, but Cory Schneider was incorrectly called for playing the puck outside of the trapezoid late in the third period, a penalty that resulted in Detroit scoring just seconds after the ensuing face-off. It led to Detroit already had the lead at the time, but the penalty and goal pretty much eliminated any comeback chance the Devils might have had.

Stat of the Night

I'm not sure if this actual qualifies as a "stat," but it's numbers and math and it's sure to make you think. Or scream. Here is Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter talking about his team's performance through Thanksgiving.

Via Jon Rosen of the LA Kings insider:

I don’t go by U.S. Thanksgiving because the season started this year a week earlier. So if you look at it, when you break it all out, I don’t look at it as 82. I look at it as 80, I look at it when you get to 20, I look at it when you get to 40. This year, 41 is actually the calendar year, which if you base it on 82, that’s half a year. You know what? Tomorrow’s 30 games. If we had 40 points, you’d double 60, that’s 80. That means after 60 you’ve got 80. What you get in the last 22? You need a hundred to make the playoffs. There’s no way around it.

It's so simple.

There is a good chance you won't see a better save than the one Jonas Gustavsson made on Friday night.

After Jimmy Howard gave up five goals against the Philadelphia Flyers in his last outing, the Detroit Red Wings countered on Friday night by inserting backup goalie Jonas Gustavsson into the lineup.

It resulted in this absolutely ridiculous behind-the-back glove save that will no doubt be in the running for one of the best saves of the NHL season.

Unbelievable.

This game didn't have much action in the first period in terms of shots on goal, but on the rare occasion somebody did get one through, crazy things were happening. There was this save by Gustavsson, and then there was Cory Schneider's jersey making a save for the Devils.

This isn't the type of bounce the Red Wings need with two of their best players out of the lineup.

With Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk out of the lineup, the Detroit Red Wings are having a hard enough time finding offense. The last thing they need is puck luck to be working against them.

That's what happened on Friday night when Justin Abdelkader fired a shot at Devils goalie Cory Schneider, only to have the puck get stuck in Schneider's jersey on its way into the net and fall harmlessly to the ice just in front of the goal line.

There's not much you can do about that. Sometimes the puck bounces your way ... and sometimes it doesn't.

Alex Stalock doesn't get many opportunities to play in San Jose, but he took advantage of it on Friday with a great toe save on Nathan Gerbe.

Alex Stalock was making a rare start for the San Jose Sharks on Friday night and it didn't take him long to come up with a huge save against the Carolina Hurricanes.

With the Sharks already up 1-0, Stalock made this great toe save on Carolina's Nathan Gerbe to protect the lead.

The Sharks would add a second goal just a few minutes later.

Stalock relieved starter Antti Niemi after two periods on Thursday night in Pittsburgh, stopping two of the three shots he faced. Friday was just his fourth start of the season for the Sharks.

In five appearances this season he has a .944 save percentage and a 3-0-0 record.

The Carolina Hurricanes had 2013 American League rookie of the year Wil Myers sounding the siren before their game against San Jose on Friday night.

Every once in a while the Carolina Hurricanes score somebody big to sound the warning siren before their home games (former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher has done it a handful of times, perhaps most famously before a playoff game against the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 2009).

On Friday, it was Tampa Bay Rays outfielder and 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers.

Before Myers made his Major League debut he appeared in 64 games with the Durham Bulls, Tampa Bay's Triple-A affiliate. He was also born in nearby Thomasville, North Carolina.

Myers finished his rookie season with a .293 average, 13 home runs, 53 RBI, and an .831 OPS.

A daily NHL feature that asks five questions about the days games. Will they be answered? (That doesn't count as one of the questions.)

1. Who will rebound with a win tonight, the Detroit Red Wings or the New Jersey Devils?

In its first game without both Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, Detroit was blown out by the Flyers in the third period, allowing four goals in just under 14 minutes of play, and five straight to end the game. New Jersey, on the other hand, is coming off of two straight losses to the Montreal Canadiens in spite of holding a wide edge in play. In the second of the two losses, the Devils blew two separate one-goal leads in the last half of the third period only to lose in the shootout. One of these teams is going to get a much-needed win.

2. Who will win the battle of Western powers in Chicago?

The Anaheim Ducks have been a bit of a wilting flower lately, but they shouldn't have trouble getting motivated for a big game in Chicago against the Blackhawks. Anaheim swept the powerhouse Hawks last season, winning all three regular season games, but has lost three of its last four. Chicago has also lost two in a row, both by a score of 4-3. Something has to give.

3. How does Colorado react to being blown out by a bad team?

After a shellacking at the hands of the lowly Edmonton Oilers where Semyon Varlamov allowed eight goals, the Avalanche head south to take on the other Alberta team, the equally lowly Calgary Flames. A lot has been said about Patrick Roy leaving Varlamov in for eight goals so close to the 18-year anniversary of Mario Tremblay leaving Roy in for nine, but it's the reaction that counts. We'll find out tonight if the Avs can bounce back.

4. Can Roberto Luongo help the Vancouver Canucks gain ground in the Pacific Division?

The Canucks have played very well this year from a possession perspective, but they haven't had an easy go of things in the toughest division in hockey. They face a divisional opponent tonight in the Phoenix Coyotes, a team that's been struggling of late. Now would be a good time for goaltender Roberto Luongo to get on a roll.

5. Will Ryan Suter play under 26 minutes against the Columbus Blue Jackets?

Suter has been playing an unbelievable amount of hockey this year, but his 26:06 against the Blackhawks Thursday night was the least he's played in a game since Nov. 3 against New Jersey. On the second half of a back-to-back set against a weak team, and with a win in the bank, this is logically a great opportunity to give Suter a nice rest to keep him fresh. Will it happen though?
