Such a great save from the Nigerian keeper, especially considering that Džeko tends to not miss when he's given a look at the goal from that close. The post gets an assist as well, but this is easily one of the saves of the tournament.

Nigeria eliminated Bosnia and Herzegovina from the World Cup with a narrow win in Cuiabá.

Nigeria eliminated Bosnia and Herzegovina from the World Cup with a 1-0 win in Cuiabá on Saturday. A first-half goal from Peter Odemwingie was enough for the Super Eagles to take victory and end the Dragons' hopes of making the knockout stage. It was a tight game throughout, and only Bosnia's leaky defence proved to be the difference between the sides.

The victorious Super Eagles shaded the opening exchanges of the match, with Odemwingie curling a free-kick narrowly wide of Asmir Begović's post, before Ahmed Musa miscontrolled in the penalty area and the Bosnian keeper was called into action on a long-range drive by Ogenyi Onazi.

However, though Bosnia looked quiet early on, they should have had the lead in the 21st minute when Edin Džeko slotted a Miralem Pjanić shot beyond Vincent Enyeama, only to see the offside flag wrongly raised. The momentum of the game seemed to be gradually shifting in Bosnia's favour, with Haris Medunjanin sending Džeko through on goal again within minutes, only for Enyeama to palm the striker's shot away.

But Nigeria still stayed dangerous on the counter-attack, and they took full advantage by opening the scoring just short of the half-hour. Emmanuel Emenike out-muscled Bosnia defender Emir Spahić down the right, before drilling the ball across the box for Peter Odemwingie to stroke beyond Begović. They managed to hold the lead into halftime, with Džeko squandering a couple of half-chances before the break.

With Bosnia showing little improvement in the first 10 minutes of the second half, coach Safet Sušić opted to throw on Vedad Ibišević alongside Džeko up top, as the Dragons began to try and desperately chase an equalising goal. That, however, inevitably left them weaker in midfield, and Nigeria almost capitalised through Emenike just past the hour; Begović got down to save his effort at the near post. Instead of looking more threatening going forward, Bosnia seemed to have lost their grip on the proceedings.

Their best chances came from crosses into the box, with substitute Ibišević flashing a header wide and Džeko nodding right at Nigeria keeper Enyeama in stoppage time. Another great chance fell to Džeko in the final minute, though his effort on the turn somehow clipped the post.

The Super Eagles barely survived the Dragons' late rally to move ever closer to the knockout stage. Bosnia, meanwhile, will progress no further than the group stage in their first World Cup.

Not long after Bosnia and Herzegovina had a goal wrongfully disallowed for offside, Nigeria took the lead in their crucial World Cup clash.
The Bosnians were not only mad about their earlier disallowed goal, but the lack of a call on Emmanuel Emenike here. Emir Spahic went down under his challenge before the assist and the Bosnians wanted a foul, but it would have been a soft call. There's not much in that scuffle.

Following pretty poor opening game results and another win for Argentina earlier, Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina will both be after a win on Saturday (6 p.m. ET, ESPN). A draw isn't necessarily a disaster for either team, but it'll leave them needing a good result -- and in Bosnia's case, some help as well -- to advance to the next round.

Poor results in the opening game should also result in changes for both teams, and in particular Nigeria, who struggled mightily to break down an Iran team that didn't do much attacking. Even though they'll be in pole position to finish second in the group if they get a draw in this game, they face Argentina next, while Bosnia will like their chances of beating Iran.

Nigeria really needed to take three points off Iran in their opener, but they didn't play well and were held to a draw. Now they face a Bosnia side that looked solid against Argentina, despite falling 2-1. A win for either side would put them in the driver's seat to advance to the Round of 16.

Even with that disappointing performance against Iran, Nigeria are still in great shape, assuming they can bounce back and defeat Bosnia. A win for the Super Eagles would eliminate Bosnia and put Nigeria on the verge of advancing. Stephen Keshi will need his team to do better on the attack, actually creating chances rather than just hoofing the ball forward towards Emmanuel Emenike.

Bosnia ended up an unfortunate own-goal away from pulling off a draw against one of the tournament favorites in Argentina. Despite that early goal, Bosnia responded well and gave the Argentines a solid test. That performance should give them confidence heading into a vital second match. Vedad Ibisevic could get a start for Bosnia after coming off the bench and scoring a goal against Argentina.

With both Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina failing to win their opening World Cup games, their meeting on Friday is a very important affair.

Nigeria 1, Bosnia-Herzegovina 0: Super Eagles eliminate Dragons

Nigeria has a solitary point after the first slate of Group F games, while Bosnia and Herzegovina are sat on a big fat zero thanks to an opening defeat to Argentina. However, it's paradoxically the Dragons who are probably more content with their position, knowing they still have this clash with the Super Eagles and minnows Iran still to play. For them, progression into the knockout stages is still a very realistic prospect.

Nigeria, meanwhile, could well head into the final matchday having to pick up points against World Cup contenders Argentina to progress into the knockout stages. That would be the case if Bosnia earns at least one point in this match and then have enough left to beat a stubborn Iran. In short, this game is a must-not-lose for Bosnia, and in all likelihood a must-win for Nigeria.

Team news

Nigeria were very disappointing in their opening draw with Iran. Coach Stephen Keshi may, therefore, opt to make changes to his starting lineup, with Shola Ameobi and Peter Odemwingie alternative attacking options. They'll hopefully have defender Godfrey Oboabona fit to play after he picked up an ankle injury in the opening game.

Bosnia have been boosted by the news that their captain Emir Spahić is set to quickly bounce back from a knee problem. Otherwise coach Safet Sušić should have a full complement of players to choose from. He may well start an unchanged lineup from the one that lost 2-1 to Argentina in their opening game, though veteran forward Vedad Ibišević could come in alongside Edin Džeko up top after scoring their consolation from the bench.

Projected lineups (left to right)

Nigeria (4-2-3-1): Vincent Enyeama; Juwon Oshaniwa, Joseph Yobo, Kenneth Omeruo; Efe Ambrose; Ogenyi Onazi, John Obi Mikel; Victor Moses, Ramon Azeez, Ahmed Musa; Emmanuel Emenike.

Key matchups

Nigeria's attackers vs. Muhamed Bešić - One of Bosnia's star performers in their defeat to Argentina was defensive midfielder Muhamed Bešić, who was effectively the only true defensive anchor tasked with shielding the Dragons' centre-backs. With Nigeria often playing extremely narrow when they venture forward -- Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa both like to drift inside -- the defender-turned-midfielder Bešić will have to be just as impressive once again.

Nigeria's defence vs. Miralem Pjanić and Edin Džeko - Bosnia's creative midfielder Miralem Pjanić and their powerful centre-forward Edin Džeko will surely stand out as the two most talented names on this game's teamsheet. With Pjanić having impressed in an excellent season at AS Roma, Nigeria will have to work hard to keep him quiet. He's not quite as comfortable in a midfield pivot as he would be with the freedom to break forward in a 4-3-3, though his incisive passing will still be a big threat. If he can find the lethal Džeko in space in the box, the ball will probably end up in the back of the net.

Prediction

This game is very difficult to predict, not least given how the importance of the occasion could lead to some cagey football. However, if these sides' opening group games are anything to go by, it's the Dragons who should just about have the edge. 2-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina.
