15. Timbers: Kyle Davies, D, FC Dallas
Chopping Timber: I chose Davies for three reasons: 1. He is a young defender with loads of potential. 2. He's currently playing for FC Dallas a team which is considered the favorite to win the MLS Cup on Sunday. That kind of experience is huge. 3. As the former captain of the USMNT U-20 he has experience in leading a team. Going forward I see Davies as maturing into possible captain quality and being a strong defender throughout.
16. Whitecaps: Cristian Arrieta, DF, Philadelphia Union
86 Forever: Who the hell expected the Philadelphia Union to lose two guys in the expansion draft? But I've seen enough of Cristian Arrieta over his years in the second division to know that he is a fine, fine defender. He can play centrally, he can play on the flanks, he can come off the bench. He can advance the ball up the field but never tries to do too much. He's not the most athletic guy in the world, but the Whitecaps have a pretty pacey defense and that'll keep Arrieta out of trouble. He's a simple, savvy veteran who I know can get the job done because he's proven it, and you won't find a better player for less money.
New protected players: Eric Avila (FC Dallas), all the Union.
