Omar Cummings To Return To Colorado After Loan Deal With Aston Villa Falls Through

Despite positive words about Omar Cummings from Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier, it seems the Colorado Rapids striker is headed back to the United States. Soccer journalist Frank Dell'Apa tweeted the news this afternoon:

Omar Cummings coming back to Colorado - loan deal with Aston Villa falls through, according to source.less than a minute ago via web

Cummings has been training with the Premier League side since the end of December, but slight injury setbacks kept him from displaying his full capabilities early on. While Houllier noted that Cummings was getting better with every training session, it seems that the Rapids man is now surplus to requirements. Of course, the Villa have spent the day working on a surprise move for Sunderland forward Darren Bent, and are set to pay upwards of £18M for him. With Cummings set to provide cover for an injured Emile Heskey and a departing John Carew, it seems that the impending arrival of Bent has deemed him surplus to requirements.

Rapid fans must be thrilled, however. While exposure with a Premier League side would have certainly helped advance Cummings' game, it could also have led to Aston Villa purchasing him outright, leaving Colorado without their top scorer.
