The Philadelphia Union have been controlling their match with the Vancouver Whitecaps ever since Eric Hassli was sent off with his second yellow card in the 57th minute. They finally made good on that domination when they scored in the 77th minute on Carlos Ruiz's first goal in a Union uniform.
Ruiz scored off an assist from Sebastian Le Toux, who had gotten well behind the Whitecaps defense when a long shot deflected off a couple defenders. Le Toux was able to find Ruiz, who was totally unmarked at the far post and Ruiz easily scored the goal.
Hassli was sent off when he made a sloppy foul, basically colliding with a Union player. Hassli had picked up his first yellow card when he needlessly tripped Union defender Danny Califf on what was essentially a dead ball. Hassli's yellow card was the sixth of the match after five were handed out in the first half.
