Less than a year after hiring him, Chivas Guadalajara have parted company with adviser Johan Cruyff. The Dutch footballing legend, who played for and managed Ajax and Barcelona, was fired by the club in hilarious circumstances. The club announced his departure during the Liga MX final, contested between eventual champions Tijuana and Toluca, the latter of which had a chance to match Chivas' record for most titles.

Head coach John van 't Schip, a Dutchman who was recommended to the team by Cruyff, is likely to remain in his position heading into next season. The club announced that other coaching and backroom staff was unlikely to be affected by Cruyff's departure.

Chivas struggled this season, but managed to make a late run to the Liguilla playoffs after a derby win over Club America ignited a great run of form. The Chivas board claimed that Cruyff failed to meet "the outcomes and objectives that have been established since the beginning of the contractual relationship."
