After spending the last couple weeks on trial, former Italian international Matteo Ferrari signed with the Montreal Impact on Thursday. Ferrari most recently played in Turkey's first-division with Besiktas, but has played more than 20,000 minutes in Italy's Serie-A with such clubs as Inter Milan, Parma and AS Roma. He also has 33 caps with Italy, although the last one was in 2004.
"I’m very happy for this opportunity to play an important role with the Impact in its inaugural season," Ferrari said in a team release. "I hope to help this team progress and succeed in its first campaign in MLS. I’ve only been here a short time, but I’m happy with the organization. The coaches and the players have been great to me."
Ferrari, 32, has battled injuries recently, but could win a starting job. He would most likely be paired with Nelson Rivas, another player with Serie A experience who has battled injuries.
