Hull City vs. Liverpool: Final score 3-1, Tigers roar into top half

New, comments

An excellent defensive performance by Hull and some errors at the back by Liverpool saw the hosts clinch a priceless victory.

Liverpool have fallen seven points behind Arsenal and are now very much in a tight race to stay in the top four after Hull City turned in a fantastic defensive performance at The Circle. Liverpool had all of the possession, but lacked bite up top with Daniel Sturridge out and made a few errors as Hull clinched a 3-1 win.

Hull's opener was a bit lucky, with Tottenham loanee Jake Livermore scoring with a massive deflection. He took an extremely speculative shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 20th minute, but it hit off a Liverpool defender and ricochet up in the air. The deflection was perfect from Livermore's perspective, looping over the head of Simon Mignolet and into the back of the net.

Steven Gerrard equalized for Liverpool seven minutes later, taking advantage of an error at the back by Curtis Davies. The Hull defender took down Jordan Henderson on the edge of the box and Gerrard placed a perfect free kick into the bottom corner, catching Allan McGregor stepping the wrong way with his shot to the back post.

The visitors were the aggressors through the end of the first half and early in the second half, but struggled to create chances. Philippe Coutinho came off the bench to replace Raheem Sterling in the 66th minute, but his impact was minimal. With Liverpool growing more and more frustrated, space opened up for Hull and they found a stunning go-ahead goal through David Meyler in the 72nd minute.

Some terrible defending by Liverpool saw no one clear the ball away after Meyler's initial effort from 15 yards was blocked. He looked more surprised than anyone to be able to run onto a follow-up, then get a step on his defender and place a low shot past Mignolet at the far post. Martin Skrtel helped Hull seal the result three minutes from regular time, redirecting a Tom Huddlestone shot that was going wide into the back of his own net.
