Manchester United vs. Real Madrid, 2013 UEFA Champions League: Lineups

Alex Ferguson has stunningly picked Nani for his Manchester United team, while also leaving out Wayne Rooney in favor of Ryan Giggs. Gonzalo Higuain for Karim Benzema is the only change of note for Real Madrid.

Update: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid, final. Madrid progress to Champions League quarterfinals.

You've been waiting for a Fergie Special lineup, and you've got it! Alex Ferguson has left all of Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young out of his team to start against Real Madrid. Instead, he's chosen Ryan Giggs in midfield and Nani on the wing. Seriously.

Ferguson had hinted at playing Giggs, which is unorthodox but hardly insane. With Phil Jones and Paul Scholes unavailable, he's not a terrible choice for a disciplined option in midfield. Nani, however, is a very odd selection. He's been more or less frozen out and no one would have guessed he'd feature.

Jose Mourinho has picked a much more conventional team. The only mild surprise is Gonzalo Higuain, but Mourinho regularly rests the center forward he plans on playing in Champions League in the previous league game, so this isn't a terribly shocking development.

Manchester United lineup (4-3-3): David De Gea; Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Rafael; Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs, Tom Cleverley; Danny Welbeck, Robin van Persie, Nani

Real Madrid lineup (4-2-3-1): Diego Lopez; Fabio Coenträo, Sergio Ramos, Raphäel Varane, Alvaro Arbeloa; Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira; Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Özil, Angel Di Maria; Gonzalo Higuain
