Xabi Alonso will miss out on this summer's Confederations Cup in Brazil as he continues to struggle with a groin injury he picked up last month. Real Madrid club doctors did not give Alonso clearance to travel to Brazil despite his desire to try and recover in time.

Alonso has spent the last few week undergoing treatment and rehab in an effort to make a recovery but in the end he didn't have enough time. He's expected to undergo surgery to correct the sports hernia. Assuming there are no complications he should be fit for the start of the 2013-14 season.

Vicente del Bosque is not expected to turn to Beñat or Javi Garcia as a replacement for Alonso. Spain's Confederations Cup roster is expected to be announced later today.
