Olympique Lyonnais vs. Real Sociedad: Final score 0-2, Lyon looking buried

This will be a season without Champions League football for Olympique Lyonnais, undone by two stunning goals and a red card on Tuesday.

Don't expect to see Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League group stage this season. They were thoroughly outplayed at home by Real Sociedad, who scored a pair of incredible goals en route to a 2-0 win over the French giants.

Lyon were surprisingly on the back foot from the beginning of the match, with the visitors' superiority obvious early and often. Carlos Vela had Sociedad's first big chance of the night in the 12th minute, when he hit the post from the edge of the penalty area. Not long afterwards, Antoine Griezmann found the opener, and he did it in spectacular fashion.

Vela set up the goal with a cross toward the back post, around 12 yards from goal, but the goal was all about the finish. Griezmann jumped up to hit a volley, his foot level with his head, and powered a scissor kick into the back of the net.

The hosts' best chance of the first half came through Yoann Gourcuff, who had 20-yard blast to the near post well saved by Claudio Bravo in the 27th minute. It wasn't until well into the second half when Bravo would be asked to make another difficult save.

Sociedad doubled their lead just after the break with a goal that was just as good as the first. Haris Seferović appeared to have a bad angle at the goal and a couple of passing options when he picked up the ball on the left flank in the 50th minute, but instead opted to hit an audacious half-volley with his left foot from 35 yards. Incredibly, he connected perfectly and hit a rocket of a shot past Anthony Lopes, who was left stunned.

Lyon nearly got back into the game in the 74th minute when Bravo was forced into a save on Miguel Lopes, but the home side wasn't hopeful of a comeback for long. Just one minute later, Milan Biševac picked up his second booking of the game and was sent off.

The visitors will head to the Basque Country as very heavy favorites to advance on the back of their two-goal lead, but they were unlucky not to add to their advantage. Xabi Prieto was booked for diving inside the box in the 80th minute when it appeared that he was fouled and Henri Bedimo had to block a shot by Ruben Pardo off the line in the 89th.

Olympique Lyonnais: A. Lopes, Bedimo, Biševac (red 75'), Fofana, Grenier, Gourcuff, M. Lopes, Gonalons, Malbranque (Bahloui 57'), Lacazette, Benzia (Danic 58')
