Cartagines scored four goals and won when they played Isidro Metapan in El Salvador, but they couldn't get the job done at home. They failed to score, and while they also held Metapan scoreless as well in a 0-0 draw, it was a missed opportunity as they looked to take command of Group 8.
The draw moved Cartagines into first place in the group, but just one point ahead of the LA Galaxy, who have only played one match to Cartagines' three. Now the Costa Ricans almost certainly have to beat LA at home to have any hope of advancing to the knockout stages, and even that may not be enough.
Cartagines had the best chances to pick up a win, but they were sloppy in front of goal. That was never more true than when Paolo Jimenez drew a penalty, but hit his spot kick well over the bar. Cartagines had other opportunities, but they wasted those as well or were second to the ball in front of goal so a disappointing home draw was all they could muster.
