Barcelona had all of the ball and more of the chances in the first half, but a set piece has, unsurprisingly, been their undoing. Pepe was left completely unmarked on a 51st minute set piece, and Real Madrid now lead El Clásico, 2-1.
The Blaugrana have been a bit better at defending set pieces this season, but then again, they haven't been playing teams up to the standard of Real Madrid. And the one team they did play who is up to that standard -- Paris Saint-Germain -- was able to score from set plays. Barca were terrorized by David Luiz in that match.
And not only was their set piece defending poor here, it was absolutely atrocious. There was no one anywhere near Pepe. It was a completely free header, and that shouldn't ever happen in a Clásico. Especially since Barcelona are starting four reasonably tall players who have played central defense in their careers.
This is also Pepe's first ever Clásico goal.
