Vincent Kompany out for Belgium, in race to get fit for Bayern Munich match

Belgium won't have captain and central defender Vincent Kompany available in their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Wales, and he might miss some time for Manchester City too.

He's picked up a calf strain, and Belgium boss Marc Wilmots says he'll be out for 10 days or more.

"I received a call from Vincent earlier. He is out for Manchester City for 10 to 12 days, so is unavailable for Sunday. It's a shame but there is no problem, there are only solutions."

That means Kompany is almost certain to miss out on City's Premier League match against Swansea City in just over a week, but that won't concern Manuel Pellegrini. What will terrify the City boss, however, is that Kompany is going to struggle to be fit in time for his side's huge UEFA Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

City only took one point from two matches against CSKA Moscow in that competition, meaning they might need two straight wins to qualify for the knockout stage. Because City lost the head-to-head against CSKA, they cannot qualify for the knockout stage if they lose to Bayern, no matter what happens in the CSKA-AS Roma match.
