It's been a season of frustration for Newcastle in the Premier League. Through their first eight matches, they had yet to find a win and many of their five losses were truly miserable experiences for Magpie fans. They were hoping to bounce back with a win against Norwich City, but knew it would take a big performance from someone to get the job done. A big performance is exactly what they got from Georginio Wijnaldum.
Wijnaldum scored a stunning four goals for Newcastle, leading the way in an explosive 6-2 win over the Canaries. That scoreline didn't just give Newcastle their all-important first win of the season, it also doubled their season scoring output so far and finally raised them from the bottom of the table. They're still in the relegation zone, but finally Newcastle fans have a ray of hope to cling to.
From our Newcastle blog:
While no one expected this kind of performance from Wijnaldum, he has consistently been one of Newcastle's best players this season, if not their best player period. He signed for Newcastle in July for £14 million from defending Eredivisie champions PSV in the Netherlands, and was already the team's leading goalscorer on the season with two to his name.
While we certainly can't expect Wijnaldum to go out and score four goals every match, if he can keep up this kind of positive form, it's going to make life a lot easier on Newcastle as they try to duck relegation this season. Newcastle as a whole played better today than they have at really any point this season, so maybe, just maybe, there's hope on the horizon for the Tynesiders.
