Tottenham Hotspur are widely reported as having joined the race to sign MK Dons' talented young midfielder Dele Alli. According to BBC Sport, Newcastle United had been in pole to sign the England youth international, though Spurs have since surged into the lead and are "quietly confident" of getting the deal done by the time the transfer window closes later today.

The 18-year-old has been at MK Dons throughout his short professional career -- having joined the club as a youth player back in 2007 -- and made his first professional appearance three years ago. Perhaps most notable is his scoring record, with Alli having netted 12 times in 27 matches from midfield so far this season. The Dons are currently flying high in English football's third tier, sitting only a couple of points adrift of league-leading Bristol City.

If Spurs do manage to complete the deal, it remains to be seen whether they'll loan Alli back to the League One side for the remainder of the campaign. He's unlikely to become an immediate first-team player at White Hart Lane, so it would make sense for them to allow him to play regular football for as long as possible.
