England outplayed Japan for most of their Women's World Cup semifinal, and had a half-dozen chances to put the game away in the second half. They looked to be headed to extra time until this happened. In the 90th minute, Bassett poked the ball off the underside of her own crossbar, it bounced into her own goal, and the goal-line decision system told the referee it was in. It gave Japan the 2-1 win.
This is an all-time awful gut-punch loss. England were so close to getting to their first ever World Cup final, and then they went out like this.
