Costa Rica and Mexico were supposed to win their Gold Cup groups and quarterfinals comfortably, setting up a marquee matchup in the semis. Instead, both slipped up, and we get to watch them clash a round early.
Both finished runners-up in their group -- something that was slightly more understandable for Costa Rica than Mexico. Los Ticos were in a solid group and suffered a series of injuries before the tournament. El Tri had some injury troubles of their own, but they certainly weren't as dramatic, and they shouldn't have struggled against Guatemala or blown two leads against Trinidad and Tobago.
Mexico switched from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 formation in their last group stage game and it didn't serve them well. They didn't create more chances than they did in the other formation and their defense was much worse. What they go with in this game is anyone's guess. Costa Rica have also tried out multiple formations, but should roll with something that resembles a 4-3-3.
