The United States have one last friendly to tune themselves up before they start the Hex round of World Cup qualification in CONCACAF next month. They'll be using this match against New Zealand to try to learn as many lessons about themselves as they possibly can before taking on Mexico in a crucial clash in Columbus a few weeks from now.
Potentially making things interesting for the USMNT is that they'll be coming into this match with a side that's been heavily changed since their 2-0 win over Cuba in Havana last week. Numerous players returned to their clubs and were replaced in the last few days, meaning that Jurgen Klinsmann will almost certainly be putting out a wildly different team to the one he deployed on Friday. It will be an interesting test of the USMNT's depth, and players who do well in this match will almost certainly be leaned on to help support the team during the Hex.
New Zealand aren't a team that the U.S. can just blindly roll over, though. They're coming off winning the OFC Nations Cup in June, and have won all three of their own World Cup qualifiers so far, giving up just one goal in the process. They also troubled Mexico in a friendly over the weekend, scoring a second-half equalizer before El Tri were able to pull out the win. If the USMNT are able to beat New Zealand more thoroughly, and with a team of mostly reserve players at this point, that could put them into a very good position when they face Mexico with qualifying points on the line next month.
