The 2016 Olympics men's soccer tournament has been one of stories. Of Nigeria overcoming a late arrival and numerous injuries to make a deep run. Of Honduras continually upsetting the odds. Of Mexico falling flat. Of Argentina falling apart. And most importantly, of Germany's quiet dominance and of Brazil's resurgence on the road to the gold medal match.
Germany quickly went from a dark horse contender to a runaway favorite, thanks in large part to Serge Gnabry -- and he wasn't even supposed to be a starter. But when Leon Goretzka went down with injury in the first half of Germany's group-opening match and Gnabry emerged from the bench, it completely changed how Germany played and looked on the pitch -- and made them much more lethal. Six Gnabry goals and five dominant performances later, and Germany are in the gold medal match.
Brazil came into the tournament as the runaway favorites, hoping to use their overwhelming attacking talent and the support of the home crowd to win their first Olympic gold. Instead, they were held scoreless in their first two matches, leading many to question just how good the team really was. In response, Brazil scored 12 goals in their next three matches to propel themselves to the gold medal match -- and they have yet to give up so much as a single goal in the tournament, proving their defense is better than some thought.
This has all the makings of an incredible match: two powerful and in-form sides going head-to-head with Olympic gold on the line. Brazil will have the support of the home fans on their side, while Germany look to prove that their youth has what it takes to beat anyone. Both countries can win their first Olympic gold for men's soccer, adding just that little bit of extra meaning that could propel the game to a whole extra level of intensity.
