Executives at FIFA and Adidas will be covering their faces and watching through their fingers on Tuesday night as Argentina attempts to avoid disaster and qualify for the 2018 World Cup. To do so, they’ll need to beat Ecuador and get a little bit of help as well.

Lionel Messi missing out on the World Cup would be a disaster for all of the people who make money off it. His Argentina team has gone through multiple coaching changes and played terrible soccer in the wake of Messi and some of his teammates threatening to retire due to poor management by the Argentinian FA. But they still have a chance on the final day.

Ecuador has been eliminated from contention after making the World Cup last time around. But La Tri will still want to avenge their defeat from four years ago, when Argentina won in Quito.

Argentina currently sits in sixth place on 25 points. Colombia and Peru, who sit in fourth and fifth place on 26 and 25 points, respectively, play each other. Chile is in third on 26 points and plays Brazil, who has already qualified. All teams are within one goal of each other on goal differential. The top four teams make the World Cup automatically, while fifth place heads to an intercontinental playoff and sixth place is eliminated.
