Tuesday marks the ceremonial start of the European club soccer season. Some leagues are underway, but the UEFA Super Cup always feels like when thinks kick off in earnest. And this year’s edition features two of the world’s biggest teams: Real Madrid and Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho has won the UEFA Champions League twice and the UEFA Cup once, but has never won this competition. Real Madrid is the defending champion, having defeated Sevilla in a 3-2 thriller last season.
Both teams will field strong teams, but Manchester United has quite a few major absences. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are both suspended, while injuries to Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw leave United thin on defense. Ashley Young is also unavailable.
Don’t expect to see Cristiano Ronaldo for long in this game. He’s made the trip, but had extra time off training and Zinedine Zidane won’t risk him for more than a quick run-out in this game. Otherwise, Real Madrid has a full squad to choose from.
