Top-seeded Serena Williams breezed through the opening round at the 2014 U.S. Open, dispatching fellow American Taylor Townsend in straight sets.

Williams advanced to Round 2 by spending less than an hour on the court opposite the 18-year-old Townsend. Williams allowed only five points on serve throughout the match, one that she dominated after falling behind, 2-1, early in the first set.

The five-time U.S. Open winner will take on Vania King in the second round. Williams has lasted beyond the third round in each of the last 13 U.S. Open tournaments in which she has participated.

Federer advances

Roger Federer, the No. 2 seed in the men's bracket, took down unranked Australian Marinko Matosevic in three sets to advance to the second round.

Federer captured the first two sets, 6-3, 6-4, before going into a tiebreaker in the third. Federer defeated Matosevic in that extra set, 7-4, to cap off the two-hour, 26-minute match. Federer will face another Australian, Sam Groth, in Round 2. Federer has made it past that round in each of the past 14 U.S. Open tournaments.
