Rafael Nadal is into the quarterfinals of the 2018 Australian Open. Nadal needed four sets, but he bested 24th seed Diego Schwartzman, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3.
Nadal took the first set without much issue, though at one point Schwartzman delivered five aces in two games, and has seven aces total in the first set. Still, Nadal won it at 6-3.
The second set went the other way, though, with Schwartzman winning a tiebreak to make it a set apiece. The third was all Nadal, and the fourth also ended in favor of the top seed, though it was hard-fought.
Caroline Wozniacki, the women’s second seed, continued her excellent run with a thrashing of the 19th-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova. Wozniacki won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, and is now into the quarterfinals. Wozniacki, 27, has been a fixture in the top 10 for a long time, but has never won a Grand Slam. Her best finish at the Australian Open was a 2011 semifinals appearance.
A seeded woman was taken down by an unseeded, but it wasn’t surprising. No. 29 Anett Kontaveit was downed in three sets by Carla Suarez Navarro, who has been seeded in the top 10 in the past. Navarro won the match, 4-6, 6-4, 8-6.
On the men’s side, top-10 player Pablo Carreno Busta was downed in four sets by Marin Cilic. The sixth seed, Cilic fought hard and wound up taking two of his three sets in a tiebreak, winning, 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(0), 7-6(3).
