Roger Federer will go for his 20th Grand Slam title on Sunday, as he’s into the final of the Australian Open against Marin Cilic, a man he’s been able to beat on eight previous occasions. Cilic is going for his second Grand Slam win, and his first in Melbourne.
Those watching in the United States will need to tune into ESPN at 3:30 a.m. ET. On top of that, the match will be streamed live online at WatchESPN, ending around 6:30 a.m.
Federer has won 20 Grand Slams, including five times at the Australian Open. He’s the defending champion after beating Rafael Nadal in the finals in 2017. Nadal was the top seed this year, but lost to Cilic, the sixth seed, in the semifinals. Federer is already considered the best of all time, but a 20th title would be a nice exclamation point on the statement.
Cilic, 29, has a single Grand Slam win, taking the US Open in 2014, but this is his first time in the finals in Melbourne. He was in the finals of Wimbledon in 2017, but lost to none other than Federer.
They have played each other nine times as professionals, with the last being at the ATP World Tour Finals a year ago. That match was on a hard court. Federer won it in straight sets, as he has all of their matches, save for the one win Cilic has and the 2016 Wimbledon quarterfinals, when Federer won in five sets.
Below is a look at their runs through the Australian Open this year.
