Sherm’s last home game vs GTown.
An OT classic, capped by Sherm throwing down a breakaway 2-hand reverse slam to ice the W.
Here’s the full recap, courtesy of OrangeRay:
A NCAA record crowd of 32,683 showed up to watch another memorable Syracuse/Georgetown battle. The game became a footnote in Syracuse lore when with four minutes remaining in the game, Syracuse fans threw an orange and then a cup of ice on the floor resulting in a technical foul on Boeheim. Boeheim grabbed the stadium microphone and announced to the record crowd "No more stuff on the court or I’m going to ask the referees for a technical foul. I don’t care about this game. No more stuff on the court."1 Boeheim already had two technicals at that point, and a third would mean his expulsion from the game. Fortunately the fans behaved for the remainder.
The Hoyas dominated the first half, and led 57-43 with 12:28 left in the game. Boeheim called a timeout and instructed the team to play a full court press, along with a mid court trap, leaving Coleman back as the shot blocking safety. Eight minutes and eight seconds later, the Orangemen overcame the fourteen point deficit, and would take the lead on a Thompson dunk. The Orangemen would have a 19-2 run, that gave them a five point lead. The Hoyas would not give up, however, and fought back. Syracuse led by two with 30 seconds remaining. Douglas had a chance to seal with win but missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw. The Hoyas’ Jaren Jackson would sink a 15 footer with nineteen second left, and the game would go into overtime. Overtime would see the Hoyas take the lead three times with Syracuse battling back each time, before Syracuse took the lead and pulled away to win 82-76.
Google Syracuse Dunk Tape and there are several highlights from that ferocious comeback, including one of my all-time faves, where DC turns a steal into a long outlet pass, and the ball never touches the floor as it ping-pongs eventually to a Stevie SLAM.
I was at this game, and it was BEDLAM.
