Chief Abiaka was a powerful Seminole war chief and also a medicine chief. Abiaka’s contribution to the Seminole Wars is sometimes overlooked. As the medicine chief, Abiaka was very powerful in the preparation for war. He led spiritual rituals that stirred Seminole warriors into a frenzy, striking fear into the heart of enemies. His rituals led to several key Seminole victories over larger and well-equipped enemies. A staunch opposer to take-over, Abiaka stood strong when other tribes conceded to the demands of the US government. Even after Osceola died, Abiaka led the charge for Seminole land rights. When the fighting ended, Abiaka was the only Seminole leader to remain in Florida. Starved, surrounded, and hunted down, Abiaka would not give in, sign a treaty, or obey a command for surrender.
