What legacy are we so afraid of tarnishing?
When you bring up that Syracuse football was once a great program to anyone who’s not a Syracuse fan, they say something snarky like "60 years ago??" and they’re not wrong.
Whatever legacy Jim Brown/Ernie Davis/Floyd Little left behind has been plenty tarnished by decades of ineptitude. We’ve had one season where we were ranked in any of the current players’ lifetimes. College students, and frankly most adults at this point, don’t see Syracuse as a great program that produces great running backs. And those old enough to remember that are surely not going to forget because Sean Tucker wasn’t as good as Jim Brown (spoiler alert: no one other than maybe Ernie Davis was).
The risk is zero. The potential reward is we can remind people that we once produced superstar running backs and were once a good program, and maybe some other running backs (like we’ve seen on the lacrosse side with 22) will want to follow in those footsteps.
