I'm no expert on modern run game concepts....
….cuz the offense I played on in high school 8,000 years ago looked a lot like what Illinois did Saturday (they were actually more caveman that we were as we ran the T formation as our base), and I’m sure I’ll hear from some how a zone blocking scheme asks the O line to influence the D to go where their momentum is taking them to open up lanes, but from the couch it is impossible to miss that we don’t get any push, ever. Not on 1st and 10, not on 3rd and 2, never. Our guys are never pushing the D line two yards down field, just doesn’t happen. So the running back ends up plowing into the scrum 9 times out of 10, with predictable results. Sure we pop one once in while, but that’s about it.
My point? I don’t know, but I do know that if you are knocking the other guys back you feel like you can keep knocking the other guys back.

Here's the thing....
…..if we are really to buy into the "1-0" mentality Franklin preaches, then if he’s cleared to play QB1 plays. You don’t rest him for next week cuz your entire focus is being 1-0 this week. Now, in practice we know we’ll see the the 2s sub in quicker in a game like this than say Iowa or tOSU, so how do we split that baby?
Clifford is cleared and plays the 1st quarter, he leaves with us up 14-0 due to "soreness" in (whatever we are claiming is hurt). Roberson is meh but that’s plenty good enough for this week and we win something like 28-6.

Both Sacca and Collins were banged up to start the 1992 season....
….so true freshman Wally Richardson had to start the opener at Cinny. Don’t recall how many points we scored but I know we won close, something like 24-21.

I thought Franklin's comment about the QB situation was telling...
…as well. Hard to take it as anything but a challenge to Roberson that he’s got to step it up. I’d imagine he gets the start and a quarter or so to show that with a couple of weeks of practice with the ones that he can be much better than he showed at Kinnick. If all goes well then I don’t think we see Villeaux much if at all (I’m basing this all off the assumption that the staff thinks Clifford will be back next week. If that is not the case who the hell knows). If Roberson looks a lot like they guy we saw two weeks ago then I think you have to give the other guy a shot.

Unfortuantely we are going to get late(ish) 2021 tOSU....
…..they’ve been sorting out a good amount of their early season defensive issues (which was always gonna be the case with all the talent they bring in), and they are gonna score points (yes, even on us). We are likely the most complete team they’ll have to face, and we’ve got a real chance, but the B1G championship still runs thru Columbus until someone proves otherwise.

….at some point in the future Ferentz just guaranteed he’s getting a big number hung on him. Franklin doesn’t forget this stuff and I am here for that.
(I am assuming for the purposes of this comment that Ferentz doesn’t retire and Franklin isn’t already on his way to USC)

….but we need to recall that Roberson was a 4-star recruit (blue chip). Now, the room around him got slimmer with three guys transferring out the last two years (including another 4-star recruit) and we weren’t able/willing to take in someone via the portal to fill at least one of those slots. It was a bad year for us to get our starting QB hurt when the options behind him aren’t as strong as they were or likely would be next season, but the coaching staff had to know that going into the season. Not saying they didn’t try and address the issue, but they didn’t and knew what they had. Franklin has said he always wants to have 4-5 scholarship QBs on the roster. This year he has 3, and one of them is a freshman who didn’t get to play his senior high school football season. They rolled the dice that Clifford would stay healthy or if he got banged up it would be at time we could deal with. That didn’t work out.
or a back issue....
…..he seemed to be walking awkwardly on the sideline from the little bit I saw of him, but he already has a bit of an awkward gait so who knows. I’ve heard ribs as well but from my experience he wouldn’t have been able to move that freely with freshly broken ribs. My brother-in-law mentioned concussion which certainly could be the case.

Takeway: well, that sucked....
….feel bad for Roberson. He wasn’t supposed to be QB2. Levis and Bowen would have been above him on the depth chart but that’s life right now with the transfer portal. We did great finding talent in the portal but we didn’t find a backup QB and coulda used one today. Asked the defense to make too many stops on short fields.
Selfishly wish we could get a big break like Iowa got today. They were toast and now would have to shit the bed something awful to not be undefeated going into the B1G champ game, and that team ain’t anywhere near that good.

I don't know that PSU deserves to be #4....
….but I’m damn sure Iowa doesn’t deserve to be #3. Very good defense, very good special teams and a bad offense. That may have gotten you a top 10 team in the 1980s/90s, but not these days.
Going into the game last week I was sure our offense was ready break out. Not so much it turns out. Still, CJF went out and got Yurch for games like this, and I expect he’ll earn his paycheck tomorrow. We take what they give us in the 1st half, take a lead into the 2nd half, and then start taking some shots down field. They don’t all work, but enough do. We turn the ball over twice but force three turnovers of our own.
