IMO Dale’s gotta try his absolute hardest to land Brodin; there’s no one else out there that is going to fix the defensive depth like he can. Hopefully he can leverage Billy Guerin wanting to put his stamp on the club now and get Brodin to South Florida.

Best of luck to Vinnie in Carolina. One of my favorite guys personally, always wore his heart on his sleeve and spoke his mind, and played with a lot of guts.
If this isn’t a wake up call for the group here, I don’t know what else to try.

I watched a lot of Martel when he was with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He’s a very good player, very skilled and quick, but small. He’s Malgin with a better shot and more of an edge, so it’ll be interesting to see what Springfield does with him.

What a turd of a trade.

I have pegged the Kings as well, as they only have Doughty, Martinez, and Matt Roy signed past next season, and they’re looking to deal Martinez. If Tallon throws in a top prospect or a first rounder to ship Matheson there, I could see it happening.

I think it’s feasible to see him doing this, but I agree that the cap hit is better spent elsewhere. They need that $4.875m going towards a replacement for Hoffman, and a third line center. Borgstrom’s not going to miraculously mature in the next nine months, and the Panthers are certainly parting ways with Malgin in the offseason. Boyle is perfect for that position but his health is waning and he’ll be 36 next year, so there’s a good chance the Cats do not try to re-sign him.
The Cats are going to need to re-sign Weegar in the offseason too, and there’s a legit chance that Pysyk is retained as well since he seems to be a favorite of Quenneville and is performing well for his role. Maybe not $2.73m well, but well enough the team will entertain bringing him back.
Going to be an interesting offseason as always, one made infinitely more interesting if the Cats do not make the postseason after going all in last summer.

That unit has far less offensive talent on it though. I’d expect that.

Scary situation, really glad he’s ok. Great guy.

I hate to say it but Hoffman looks and plays to me like a man who knows he’s in a contract season and is trying to make the most of it.

The biggest problem for the PP is the same issue the first line is having right now: they’re one and done. They’re not retaining possession of the puck like they were and after the first shot or scoring chance they’re not getting it back and keeping it in the zone for sustained pressure. The PP is faring little better with much of the same personnel.

This, this is very concerning.

I got to enjoy this game in person last night, and I use the term "enjoy" loosely.
The Panthers weren’t beaten by the Flyers last night. They beat themselves. They had at least six grade A scoring chances that they could not convert on, including an empty-netter for Barkov that he shot wide. They look offensively snakebitten and are just not scoring at times when they should be, given the quality looks they’re getting. Bobrovsky was not the issue last night either, so I don’t agree with sitting him, though I do agree with resting him a bit more. He did look weary by the end of that one.
Panthers are now being threatened by Montreal to jump over them if they don’t right the ship soon. These next few games are crucial in terms of determining what’s going to go down at the trade deadline too.

I hope he’s able to recover, this smells of post-concussion issues for Weegar.

Q wants consistency. All the talent in the world is meaningless if the coach never knows what kind of player they’re going to get when they put a guy out on the ice. While Matheson has a ton of talent, he’s as inconsistent as they come.

I’m good with letting Barkov heal up to 100%. Cats are really going to need him down the stretch.

Absolutely agree about Matheson. He’s an absolute albatross for the defense and the worst contract on the team. Tallon made a huge mistake giving him that deal.
To this point in the season, the goaltending has underperformed in terms of goals above replacement, and there’s definitely signs of life from Bobrovsky as of late. The defensive play has improved (although not drastically) from the start of the season, and if Bob can round into form, the need for another top-4 defensive asset becomes less and less necessary. Meanwhile, as Zim stated above, Hoffman is a big, big chunk of the offense for the Panthers and they have no one other than a few inexperienced AHL prospects to fill the third line wing role.
Keep Hoffman, get this team into the postseason, and see what happens from there. Try to retain either Hoffman or Dadonov (but not both) in the offseason, and as Zim also noted make sure you’re not preventing yourself from retaining Barkov/Huberdeau in a couple of years. If either of those two are gone after 2022, it won’t matter which one of these wingers the Panthers keep.

They had to make a move to get a goalie as Hutchinson is abysmal.

Hyman deserved a bigger ass-beating than he got. He’s been running around doing that all season. Acciari and Trouba were not the first.

I think others have mentioned it here, but Ryan Bednard has a serious chance to be an NHL goalie if he keeps up his AHL play to date. I have watched two of his three games and he looks absolutely solid. Positionally sound, he’s not overplaying the puck and relying on reflexes and he’s making it look pretty easy. I have not seen any of his ECHL work but did watch his play in the NCAA and he’s got a real shot at sticking with Springfield permanently.
