Specifically
Burns for 5 more years @ $8M, Vlasic for 6 more @$7M.
And let’s not forget Martin Jones, 4 more years @$5.75M.
It’s going to be ugly for quite a while.

Yup, and it's not going to get better soon.
They have only a few core stars – EK65, Couture (who isn’t young), Hertl and Meier; Kane can be, sometimes and LeBanc isn’t bad. Burns has been a hot mess this year and Vlasic has fallen off a cliff; both have many years of high Cap hit ahead as well.
Sad to see Patty go out as a not-Shark. Maybe he’ll re-sign for one more year?

But a lot of the likely buyers are also off the market - NYI, Carolina and the Pens (just got Marleau from the Sharks)
Who’s left? Colorado (who have said that nothing of real value is on the table) and ???

How is that not high-sticking on Helm there?

Ow, how did Larkin miss that shot?

It's been like that for a while.
IIRC, I noted a few games ago that the PP2 unit had a combined total of 11 goals this season.

Good point especially re: a potential trade with Carolina
As both Reimer and Mrazek have another year on their contracts as well. The Canes would have to trade one of the three in the off-season.

There are only 19 games left in the season
And there has already been a lot of unwatchable hockey this year.

Yeah, it'd be pretty much impossible to finish out of "#1"
That said, it’s looking like those two #6 picks could turn out really well.

That would depend on how the RWs view Veleno's ceiling
If he’s a #1C, i.e. Lafrenière<Stützle>/Veleno/Zadina as the top line, then you don’t need Newhook. If Veleno is a #3C, and you can be confident that Newhook will be a legit #1C or very strong #2 then the trade makes more sense.
My gut prefers your earlier suggestion of AA+Cholowski+2nd for Byram. Add him to Hronek and Seider, and the RWs could well have one of, if not the best, bluelines in the league if they all work out. That’s not even considering when Werenski joins the team :-)

I want whatever this guy is smoking.
I want whatever this guy GM is trading.

NHL radio was just speculating (briefly) about AA -> Edmonton
Just thinking about buyers who need offense, though, would the Islanders be a potential trade partner? They need scoring badly and have the team D to possibly cover AA’s weaknesses on that end.
Haven’t done much analysis, but maybe something like a 2nd and Bode Wilde for AA??

AA is brought up as trade bait as he's one of the few RWs who *may* bring a solid return
Unlike other equally or more valuable trade possibilities (MLB, Hronek, Zadina) he’s (IMO) not seen, however, as part of the "untouchable" core that will be competing for a cup in 3-5 years.

So ... AA with two goals, Green with one
Any scouts at the game?

Ay carumba!
How many of those do you think will be Wings when the team is contending for a playoff spot in, say, the 2021-22 season? I’m thinking 2 at most – Nemeth and Lindstrom – and maybe it’s only one or even none.
Forwards aren’t much better – I’d guess only 3 (BLM) to 7 (Fabbri and maybe Helm, Glendening and/or AA?); I’m assuming that something will be done re: Abdelkader and Nielsen by then.
Goalies: 0
So of tonight’s starting lineup of 20 players, I’d only expect 3-9 players to still be on the team in just 2 seasons. Even the injured only add another 2-3 (Hronek, Zadina and maybe DDK). Guess that’s how rebuilds work, but still – that means replacing fully 1/2 the team or likely even more in just 2 years.

Wings 2-0 just to rub it in
On a depressing note, if the Wings were to play hockey-.500 the rest of the season (almost double their pace so far), and no other team played another game, they’d still finish in 29th place.
