Many people… think of success and excellence as though they are the same. They are not. Success is perishable and often outside our control. In contrast, excellence is something that’s lasting, dependable and largely within a person’s control… People who truly excel don’t fear or resent excellence in others. People who shoot only for success, however, always feel threatened by other people’s success. Success is measured by what others think... Excellence is best measured by the achiever. -JVP I'd call you "pre-sanctions" rather than "old-fashioned". The University that did not put football first received "a package of punitive and corrective sanctions" to penalize it for putting football first, and to ensure it wouldn’t put football first in the future. As a direct result of those sanctions, the University began to put football first. [To wit: Head coach and assistant compensation is Top 5 nationally. Recruiting budget includes a helicopter lease. A few millions thrown at new carpet, sofas, and video boards. The AD is a money-raiser / facilities-maker, not a Penn Stater. And even the most basic "Penn Stater" positions go to money-raisers, not Penn Staters, because "putting football first" is a euphemism for "putting money first". ] So, you’re pre-sanctions. If you can’t fully enjoy the wins, try to enjoy the irony – and when that evaporates, the absurdity. -bscaff
