Not first time, LONG time
It’s been a while for me, but felt like i wanted to add a few thoughts…apologies for the length
-the second this hire was made, the powers that be knew (or I would have hoped they would) that this day was coming. Short of a Kevin Ollie run to the national championship with his alma mater (and we see how THAT has played out since) type dream scenario, at some point, feelings were going to be hurt. We are at that point. Everybody signed up for it, so…it is what it is.
-Pat will go through this situation and from all reports, take upwards of $20mm out of the trade. For what exactly, away from his name and a completely magical run in the BET last season? I get that he’s a legend and I will always hold him in the highest of esteem, but remember…he has been paid BEYOND a commiserate level with what he has provided to this program (in this iteration of his career). Let’s be very frank about that.
-I had an opportunity recently to have an audience with certain "decision makers" at GU and believe me, they are being bombarded with calls/emails about what is going on with this program and how sick and tired many of us are with this present situation. I’m not saying I have any idea of some sort of change coming, but the voices are getting louder and louder. I know that for a fact.
-I’m too checked out (on a game by game basis) to be rabidly interested in the program at this point, at least in this state. And yeah I get it…I’m fair-weather, blah blah blah. I’m not. Far from it. Sounds terrible but they have honestly put me in such a bad mood in years past that it’s been very good for my mental state to just keep tabs on what is going on rather than be invested in every dribble. I assume the kids are playing hard and trying their best. I assume Pat is busting his hump too (as he always has). It’s really just the time to blow it all up and start fresh. There’s just no other way.
-The Big East is for real. It’s the second best conference in the country, even if ESPN doesn’t want to admit it. And we are getting lapped. I was worried about becoming an "also-ran" in an "also-ran" conference…but with more and more people awakening to how strong the conference is, the spotlight will get brighter and brighter on GU and what’s going on there. I see that as a good thing.
-Even though others, ahem, don’t want to do it, I will. Kudos to the students. I remember my time at GU and we were actually competitive (absolutely not the glory days, mind you) and we still never went to games. The fact that you all are doing this with all of the other craziness you all have to deal with right now. Just, bravo. Mad respect from this old guy!
Finally, I’ll be pretty honest, I was never a HUGE JT guy. More so just indifferent. Think he did a lot for college basketball and society, as a whole and will be grateful to him for that along with his obvious success at my alma mater. But…at this point….he got his on campus facility that many of us helped pay for. He got his court at Cap One. He has his legacy. All of those things are BEYOND deserved. But man it’s 2022. It isn’t 1985. It’s not 1995. As people have been saying on twitter…not only do these kids, at this point, not really care all that much about that stuff (even though many of them nicely say it in recruiting interviews…and then commit to Miami) but their parents are starting to even get too old to appreciate our past. IT IS BEYOND TIME to move to the future. Watch and see how quickly Hubert Davis and Jon Scheyer get blown out of their jobs once they have a little bit of trouble. The time that this school and program has been held hostage by this situation needs to be OVER. We have done all we can to thank everybody associated with the family over the years at this point. The money, the accolades, the absolutely disgusting nepotism. I for one, am ready to move on and I have moved on until completely new blood is brought in. From what I gather, i’m very much not alone in those thoughts. HOYA SAXA.
