Shaping up to be an even more interesting off season
If we trade Carr, we get some draft value in return, but how much? If it isn’t a 1st rounder is it worth it? We wouldn’t be able to replace his level of play for something less than a 1st, IMO.
We also get the value of the cap space. That could be helpful in the shorter term, but at some point you still have to pay a QB for the long term (question is whether or not Carr is the one we want to pay that money to)
IF we could get a 1st or more in return
IF we can sign Marriotta at a reasonable amount and Gruden thinks he could be a championship QB someday
IF Kizer and Peterman are deemed sufficient backups and potential competitors to start. Mayock’s comments on Kizer were interesting. 1-2 years away from being able to play in the NFL, super high potential IF he gets everything right.
If all that happened, then we might do it. Team is still a ways away from contending to be as good as we want, and clearing the space may give us other QB options for next year if this approach doesn’t work.
But unless everything goes perfectly, the better approach might be to keep Carr for now, maybe still sign Marriotta, and still develop Kizer/Peterman to see what we have. then decide on a QB next year. Really none of the QB’s this year excite me all that much.

Agree on AJ
at the 3 technique. He’s really got a strong base. Saw him throw around some interior linemen when Iowa played him inside this year, and with his quickness and strength he can penetrate.

Ok
So what difference does your contention make then?
A, Allen CANNOT do what Ferrell can do as a DE
B. Crosby CAN do what Allen does as a DE.
C. We DID NOT want to draft Allen in the first round
D. We tried to trade down thinking Ferrell would be available later, but got no takers. So we took him
E. We got our version (and maybe a better version) of Allen in the 4th round. And Crosby has a bigger frame so I think he’s closer to being a full time DE and not just a pass rusher who needs to be protected
Again we didn’t F’ing want Allen, ,we got the guy we wanted, and we got a substitute for Allen in the 4th round that we may even like better.

They weren't used in remotely similar ways
Some 3-4 rush LB’s can line up and play like a weakside DE in a 4-3 or as a situational DE who rushes the passer. Allen would have performed much like Crosby in our system. Neither Crosby nor Allen could do what we asked Ferrell to do last year, and both played a higher number of snaps (maybe Jacksonville realized Allen had to be protected in order to do what he does best?)
Additionally, Allen was brought on a "blitz" 30 times last year – Ferrell and Maxx were brought on a blitz 0 times. Was he "blitzing" from a DE position… don’t think so. Again, not used in remotely similar ways.
Ferrell got sick during the season and lost a lot of weight, and additionally was playing inside regularly (something I hope we never see outside of some passing down packages), so we’ll know a lot more about what he can do next year. As is, we got both him and Crosby, so we’re set at DE for the future, IMO, outside of depth

that's why Mayock makes
the big bucks
Jones will be very expensive. He is a good fit for us though

My guesses
- if Joseph will sign cheap we sign him, otherwise let him go.. honestly I think someone will pay up, and I don’t think he’s worth as much as he’ll get
- Re-sign Mayowa. He’s a good rotation guy. Can’t stay healthy, but we need extra bodies
- I’d resign Harris. He shouldn’t be too expensive.

correct
I think it’s more about him being a known quantity and us wanting to keep those draft picks for other needs.
If I had to guess, I don’t think Mayock thinks it’s important enough for us to draft a RB this year unless he’s surprised by someone who’s available that we can’t afford to not take at a good spot in the draft

We're pretty desperate for talent
and more than a few worked out. It didn’t take us long to move on from AB’s trouble making either. That’s a good message to have out there for the team. If you don’t buy in, we can and will dump you

Like this signing
As the other RB on the depth chart, don’t forget William Stanback, the guy we signed from the CFL.
6-0 tall, 230 lbs
got booted in college for failing drug tests, but cleaned up his act. Ran a 4.48 in an NFL regional combine and had 34" vertical, hits the hole hard and can run through arm tackles nicely, but also shows good feet and cuts behind zone blocking.

I like Jones a lot
but if we take Kinlaw in the first, then we get a cheaper, cap controlled version and can spend the money elsewhere. Lots of options with the picks we have and the cap space we have.
wouldn’t suck to see Jones leave KC, though

Keep building talent
Keep controlling cap so that we can get guys who are fits and that we can keep a long time.
Model seems to be an Aggressive and tough D that plays press on the outside and can get pressure up front combined with a ball control offense that limits mistakes and can take advantage of teams who go too far with their roster to match up to spread passing teams (i.e., we to tight and heavy and hammer them up front).
Carr may not be the "right" guy, but in the model I describe we don’t need a great QB

Wouldn't be shocked if
we didn’t draft any LB in the first round and didn’t draft a WR in the first round.
Get Kinlaw in the first, trade down and add more picks later where we can add more and more talent. None of the LBs outside of Simmons deserves a first round pick, and there’s enough talent later at WR that we can concentrate on best player available

I think he’s gone by 19 now, but that there are good odds he’ll be there at 12. There could be someone who just has to have him, but right now odds should be OK we can get him there.
I like Delpit at 19 and think there’s a shot he’s there. If not, I’m not opposed to trading down from 19 for an different, later first rounder and some other picks later

I'm sure we'll bring more to camp, but
William Stanbeck is a good one that we signed from the CFL. Big, fast, can catch a bit as well.

Davis
isn’t a fit for a 3-4, so he has more value to us than to a lot of the teams in the league. His height isn’t great for 3-4 DE, but works fine as a 3 tech DT

All of the top LB's
are guys you have to protect and keep blockers off of. Need our Interior DL to not only suck up blockers but disrupt enough to give any LB’s we get the ability to make plays in space.
latest mock at TDN
12 – Kinlaw (looks to have moved up on their lists)
19 – Delpit (didn’t think he’d be around, but if he’s there, it works for me)
80 – Dantzler CB – seems like a guy Mayock would want
81 – Davis-Gaither LB – really moved up their lists, but there’s a lot we can do with a guy like him. Baum’s also tempting, and Malik Harrison wasn’t available here either. To me he’s not a safety at all and not really a hybrid in the NFL, but a LB you protect and let him go kill the ball carrier. Needs a solid summer of NFL S&C to add just a bit of weight
91 – Bryan Edwards – a bit of a sleeper still. The WR draft is so deep that I think we can get a starting level WR this late in the draft and look to add a FA as well
111. Jeremy Chinn – Can cover at his size, can play in the box. I like his flexibility
141. Khalil Davis – We can also fill this spot through FA, but Davis is a great fit for our 4-3. I don’t see him as a starter initially, but on passing downs he’s a guy who can bring pressure inside. Pair him with Crosby, Kinlaw, and Ferrell and you have a front 4 that would be able to generate tons of pressure on passing downs
