Long time Portland resident, love the Northwest. Grew to love soccer by watching my daughter come up through the sport. She played club and high school in Portland and D3 College at Whitman. You can reach me on twitter @rlppdx if you feel compelled.

Seems like (one of the few things) the club got absolutely right
I’ve been pretty down on the Timbers org lately.. but it seems to me they got this one right.
Give Valeri his victory tour, give the fans one last time to cheer for him, and then bring him back to Portland and into the Timbers org.
Sounds perfect to me.
Oh, and gives them time to have the statue ready to unveil as part of the 2023 game.

PTFC fan/FO relationship...
At some level, I think the PTFC/FO relationship is an amazingly tricky thing.
For their part, they can do 99% of the thing’s right, and yet every decision they make 1% is unhappy and remembers.
I don’t for the life of me know how they migrate that successfully over time.
For me personally, I’ve gone from a supporter to complete animosity over what I learned about their MLS championship ticketing approach. I’ll support the team, but the organization can go straight to (!I&*&) as far as I’m concerned.

Bluntly… I moved here in my early 20’s as a redneck as well. Probably took me 2 years of living in Portland and working in high tech to work through the process of rethinking how I viewed and valued people who weren’t like me. I’m certainly not perfect, but I’m a lot better person now than I was then.
Subnote: There’s a fascinating book called American Nations that I recommend to people. One of the key tenants is that cities don’t really change as they grow… people move there and either adopt the culture or leave (Portland is a good liberal example, Boise is a good conservative example).
Anyway, my point is, I wish she would actually come here and try and learn. I’m not sure in this scenario that anyone has moved forward.
