The New Proposed MLB Playoff Format Confuses Me
There would be seven playoff teams in each league, the top seed would get a first round bye, and other division winners would choose their wild card opponent based on best record. I feel like the #1 seed is getting punished the most.
In 2021, under this format and assuming the same records, the NL playoff teams would have been:
Wild card teams: Dodgers, Cardinals, Reds, and Phillies
The Giants would receive a first round bye, extending their days off between games from four to seven or eight. That seems like disadvantage #1 (too much rest).
I highly doubt the Brewers or Braves would choose to play the Dodgers in the first round, and would likely have avoided the red hot Cardinals as well. So the Giants would still play the Dodgers in round 2, which is disadvantage #2 (best team still plays best wild card team early).
Unless MLB lets the top seed choose its second round opponent as well, I don’t see any incentive for a team to have the best record.

The Giants "had the money" to sign Cueto and Samardzija in 2016
Outside of Barry Bonds, the Giants do not have a successful track record when it comes to signing free agents for more than three years. Then the fans get mad at the front office for not being able to make other big moves because of large payroll obligations.
I would love to have Gausman and other top level free agents, but it seems like front offices are more comfortable overpaying on yearly salary to reduce the years. If Gausman wants a five year contract instead of three years at a higher average annual value, I would let him walk.
Crawford's bat may have given him an assist
The SABR Defensive Index (which accounts for 25% of the voting on Gold Glove awards) rated Crawford as the fourth best NL shortstop. He was the only player not ranked #1 or #2 at his position to win a Gold Glove in 2021.
I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve a Gold Glove, but there was likely something else voters saw to influence their decisions.
