I think that’s a bit revisionist. He was one of the top prospects in baseball when he came up and was absolutely viewed as part of the core. In 2018 he was one of our best players and "the catch" clinched a world series berth. I’m not saying the guy is Manny Ramirez, but he was for a time a fringe all-star.

Yeah I think it’s a marginal move, but it gives you a handful of high upside, high variance guys that every system needs. If one of them hits, it’s a coup. I hate being transactional about guys, especially guys who helped bring the team a championship, but Benny’s been trending this way since mid ’19.
Worth noting as well, zips projects Verdugo, the ostensible "replacement" for Benny (though he was acquired in a different trade) as being about 8 WAR over his three years leading into UFA, Benny’s pegged for about 1.5 next year and then he hits free agency and becomes expensive/valueless. I think in the context of the overall plan, getting more production on the cheap was the idea there.
